Upon Learning They Will Stop Production of the Penny What I can’t stop thinking about is how, when I was growing up, we kept a large glass jar of them behind the couch— our way of saving for a vacation. How my dad would search for those copper-plated faces like little parking lot prayers. Looking now feels worthless but I do. Heads up, my father is still alive in another universe. Tails up, try again.

Soon, noticing that the landscape seems to keep shifting around them, Aaron starts drawing a map of it all, attempting to document and make sense of the changes. When Tacoma starts to open up bigger and bigger with possibility and wonder, Tacoma starts to fold in on itself, becoming both more self-referential and more like the spontaneous, fantastical stories Aaron has been writing. A friend rides an orca to come visit. Pirates guard a wormhole in the forest. A secret doorway in the Tacoma Mall tunnels back to Aaron’s childhood bedroom. I Saw Awesome In My Dream Timothy C Goodwin My boss stood in the doorway to my office with his hand tight around the doorknob and asked what I was doing kneeling on the floor behind my desk and because my boss was always uptight no matter what anyone told him I always told him the truth so I said I saw my old dog Awesome in a dream last night so I thought I would take a mental health break to pet him and soon enough my boss was next to me behind my desk watching quietly as I told him Awesome was panting happily because he had just finished some zoomies through the break room and his tail and tongue were wagging happily because I gave him a special treat I had been saving just for him and soon enough my boss unset his jaw and asked if he could pet Awesome too and soon enough my boss was sitting in my chair telling me Awesome was curled in his lap asking if my boss’ old cat was available to play and soon enough Awesome and Pancake were chasing each other around my office...

One time I lost sorrow; it slipped out and was buried under sand. Finely ground shells and bits of fur. One time my ancestors came walking out of the sea. They collected the bits of rock and bone and feather and fur and fashioned me. Now I fly with open mouth, trailing words and shouting meaning: “Look at what I lost.” Another swoop, closer to the ground now: “Look at what I found.” Now tusks curl from my mouth. I charge at memory, tossing aside its fragile weight that once pined me hollow. Now I am the one who will turn and return, slipping gently into water.

November 21, 2025 BROKEN GAME OF TRON Ross White After intervals of highway, you climb out of the stiff chasm of unconsciousness to more highway. Twin yellow lines stretch out in front of you like the afterimages of starships. Everything is velocity. Everything is hyperspace. Oblivion is a place not far from where you start out, not far from scrub pines and red grain silos. Take a few wrong turns in one-stoplight towns, make a few wrong choices at the beginnings of romantic misadventures, and you will find yourself, mallet in hand, hammering at the joists of a foundation, the foundation of a mansion, a mansion where no one can live. Outside are a thousand feral cats. A few fishbones. Everyone you have ever loved turns out to be a non-player character. You control nothing at all.
