Listen. This was unbelievably good. People at dinner kept asking who had made the cranberry tart and I got to say I did. It was worth all the work.

Found an incredible gift for someone’s cool dad

Oh, someone put up an email from their professor saying that they were moving a class on Thanksgiving day from in person to online since the school was closed (but the class was apparently happening), and this was one of the comments.

Page 98 from the 2000 Picador version of The Hours. The text starts in the beginning of a sentence. It reads: had stood beside her at a pond's edge at dusk, wearing cut-off jeans and rubber sandals. Richard had called her Mrs. Dalloway, and they had kissed. His mouth had opened into hers; his tongue (exciting and utterly familiar, she'd never forget it) had worked its way shyly inside until she met it with her own. They'd kissed, and walked around the pond together. In another hour they'd have dinner, and considerable quantities of wine. Clarissa's copy of The Golden Notebook lay on the chipped white nightstand of the attic bedroom where she stil slept alone; where Richard had not yet begun to spend alternate nights. It had seemed like the beginning of happiness, and Clarissa is still sometimes shocked, more than thirty years later, to realize that it was happiness; that the entire experience lay in a kiss and a walk, the anticipation of dinner and a book. The dinner is by now forgotten; Lessing has been long overshadowed by other writers; and even the sex, once she and Richard reached that point, was ardent but awkward, unsatis-fying, more kindly than passionate. What lives undimmed in Clarissa's mind more than three decades later is a kiss at dusk on a patch of dead grass, and a walk around a pond as mosquitoes droned in the darkening air. There is still that singular perfection, and it's perfect in part because it seemed, at the time, so clearly to promise more. Now she knows: That was the moment, right then. There has been no other.

Found something incredible at the estate sale.
A large yellow paperback book titled: THE X-RATED COOKBOOK 50 BEDROOM TESTED RECIPES By Susan Sky and Louise Woolf Published by R. H. Brown & Co., Inc. There is a lot of velvet and brown wallpaper. It looks very 1970s.

A brownish-burgundy velvet dress in a classic Edwardian style: narrow, floor length skirt, neckline up to the collarbone, with a little jacket-style collar made of the same material. There are pleats in the velvet, and lace on the short sleeves. There are some interesting patterns made out of folded velvet where pockets would be on the skirt and where breasts would be in the front. The dress is whole but not in great condition. The velvet is a little faded and the lace is yellowing.

I made a chicken noodle soup tonight that was just SO good: a lot of chicken, half a cabbage, carrots and onions, ginger, garlic, butter, olive oil, stock, half a bag of pasta, and then a ton of parsley and dill.

Why We Don't Sell Isaac Newton's Apple Tree 26/09/2025 Table of contents It's not a very good apple tree. Simple as that. Several years ago, we sold "Isaac Newton's apple tree" which is already a part-fib. • There is no variety named after Isaac Newton (1643-1727), it's just a regular old Flower of Kent apple • Because Flower of Kent is not a very good apple, some enterprising suppliers who shall remain nameless sold similar looking, but much superior varieties like Arthur Turner as the Isaac Newton tree • There is no way to be certain that the original tree is in fact the tree of Newton fame: there are several contenders, and they can't all be The One • Officially, the tree at Woolsthorpe Manor is the most direct descendant of the original, but The King's School, Grantham claims that they have it • Either way, it doesn't really matter: the original tree blew down in 1820, and all the proposed "originals" are regrowth from its roots Flower of Kent is a good example of why many old heritage varieties are no longer grown. They were the best available in their day, but now they are outclassed in every way by newer varieties. Despite being a vigorous tree, Flower of Kent is a poor cropper, a tip bearer, and not self fertile. All of that would be forgivable if it had great fruit, but it doesn't. Compared to the nation's most popular cooking apple, the world-famous Bramley, Flower of Kent is, completely unlike you and me, Dear Reader, worthless beyond its historical interest. If you still want to buy an Isaac Newton apple tree, our friends at Habitat Aid sell them. Habitat Aid appeared in a whole episode of Ashridge Backseat Planting, so they are a household name at this point. We haven't checked to see if they have the real Flower of Kent apple or an imposter: if you buy one, and it makes good crops of delicious fruit, you'll know you were tricked!

What’s funny is that I even knew it was from linen making, I just had never seen an image so didn’t get what it meant. It looks like this.

Anyway, it’s a small box of glass eyes and some inert pencil fuses.
A box of blue-irises glass eyes in a larger box, along with some pliers and some yellow plastic. The rest of what is in the box: some long, thin cylinders, half copper colored, a quarter black, and a quarter silver. I’m holding some so they’re visible, but the rest (a bunch) are still in bubble wrap. Next to them are a few smaller copper cylinders (also very thin), with one end crushed.

Bought some internet turmeric and made some dal and you guys were NOT kidding, this is really good.
