I wrote this before the new law was enacted but the overall argument still remains valid. Implementing the communal responsibility of promoting virtue and prevention of vice through the modern state is deeply problematic.

Taliban have banned Afghan women from attending medical institutes—the only type of modern ed allowed for females post 6th grade.

This is nothing short of a systematic femicide AND is contrary to one of the primary goals of Sharia i.e. preserving life.

I visited a #SouthKordofan camp for displaced ppl last month for @hrw.org and witnessed how #malnutrition #Starvation is killing people in #Sudan, many of them children, as warring parties block assistance and #FoodAid falls short. This is what I saw:

Dr. Muhammad Din & I have studied female madrasas in Afghanistan and found that Afghan girls and women are doing what they can to leverage what is avaiable to them to live a self-directed life as much as possible.
