Farrah and Muhanad have a lot of integrity and upon finding out that a scammer was trying to trick other Gazans by saying he promoted their campaign (when he didn’t) they decided to change the URL so he couldn’t do that- so this is their new link to their fundraiser now.

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Muhammad. Muhammad was an accountant prior to this but his workplace was destroyed and his home severely damaged. He’s hoping to leave Gaza with his family including his daughters Iman, 5 and Lian, 6 so that they can get a better education.

Alice Wong was one of the few who actually left the world better than when she entered it. A lot of the obituaries are leaving out her work on Covid, her advocacy around masking, and her work on eSims for Gaza. I tried to capture some of that in a post on IG.

arghavansallesmd: Alice Wong was, among other things, a force of nature, a writer, an activist, a MacArthur genius grant recipient, and a fierce warrior for disability justice. She spent much of the last few years advocating for masks and raising awareness of Long Covid. She also co-founded eSims for Gaza, which has raised over $3 million so far to help people in Gaza communicate with the outside world. But you won't read about that in most of the obituaries about her. I'm sharing here some of her tweets about why masking was so important to her and how hard she had to fight, even in the hospital, to get people around her to mask. Those tweets are from a hospitalization in January 2024. Ever since her tracheostomy, she could no longer protect herself from respiratory infections. Like many people, she depended on her community to keep her safe. According to her family, she passed away Friday from an infection. Aside from her work on Covid and eSims, she was best known for the Disability Visibility Project and her books, Disability Visibility, Disability Intimacy, the in-progress Disability Vulnerability, and her memoir, Year of the Tiger. She had a column at Teen Vogue on disability visibility, and she also voiced a character on Netflix that was based on her. Alice did what so many of us aspire to do-she left the world a better place than when she entered it. I never had the honor of meeting Alice. Like millions of other people, I followed and was inspired by her work. I hope you'll read these slides as a tribute to her and her efforts to build community. I hope you'll wear a mask in public spaces. I hope we'll care for ourselves and those around us the way Alice would have wanted us to. Her GoFundMe remains active and will go toward continuing her work, if anyone would like to contribute.

To explain briefly: at the moment people successful in their asylum claims get permission to stay in the UK for 5 years, then have to apply for permanent residency. At that point a review of their status is done, but it’s rare not to succeed at that point unless they‘ve committed an offence 1/

To reiterate, this is about making life immeasurably more miserable and stressful for some of the most vulnerable people, in the almost certainly vain hope of winning over the votes of racists.

Anything more shabby and shameful is difficult to envisage.

What is truly pathetic about Labour is that this is all they have got. They have failed so spectacularly already, despite a whacking great majority, to even attempt to govern positively that all they have is punching down on marginalised groups and saying "oh but Reform will be worse".
But the BBC understands Mahmood will issue a warning to her sceptical Labour colleagues in a speech to Parliament on Monday. She will suggest that while some of her plans may seem immoderate, the alternative could be a further rise in support for Reform UK. She is expected to say: '"If you don't like this, you won't like what follows me."

Ruth Wilson Gilmore's definition of the prison-industrial complex (PIC) is so useful.

As Gilmore and Craig Gilmore note, equating industrial with profit can disappear the state, and "the outcome of capitalist activity stands in for the complicated relationships that enable or change that outcome."
What is the prison-industrial complex, and why is it a useful concept for thinking about the American carceral state? Ruth Wilson Gilmore The idea for conceptualizing what we have come to describe as mass incarceration using the term “prison-industrial complex” first materialized in an article that Mike Davis published about twenty years ago in the Nation. What Mike launched into our consciousness was a provocation to think about prison, punishment, and the carceral in as expansive of a way as we had learned to think about the military-industrial complex. While a number of people over the years have written about what that complex consists of, I think I probably have written the most, or at least gone on at the most length, in part because as a PhD student I studied the military-industrial complex to shreds at the seminar table of the economist and socialist Ann Markusen. The prison-industrial complex consists of the uniformed and civilian personnel who work anywhere from the streets to the courts, to the jails, to the prisons, to the postprison-release programs, and so forth. It includes the boosters in the towns or neighborhoods where prisons and jails are built. It includes the intellectuals, including myself, who make their living either designing or condemning the design of systems of punishment. It includes finance capitalists who lend money to states and municipalities to build or improve their lockup systems. It includes the various firms that sell goods and services to states and municipalities, including the federal government, in order to keep people locked up or to keep them under surveillance when they’re not locked up. So that can be anything from food service to ankle monitors and anything in between. All that put together is the prison-industrial complex. Most of the dollars that flow through it originate from public treasuries, and they fall into the hands of people in the forms of wages, salaries, utility bills, and everything else it takes to k…
