finished the Richler Read Through. A bit disappointing, I think, but I did find the end of Barney's Version quite affecting. There was maybe ultimately a mismatch between what he had the most insight on and what he wanted to write about. He spends his later books trying to reconcile this, especially

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.
