i keep seeing people refer to the choice to erase the painting as "doing a genocide" and i feel like they missed the point that the denizens of the painting aren't real people. they're fictional characters given a degree of sentience by their nature of creation but that's incredibly limited and the very existence of, well, their existence, is finite. it's temporary. even in an ideal world, the Dessendres would eventually die and the painting would fall into disrepair or, given the time period of the game, get shelled into oblivion by the Nazis. even if it didn't, it's finite. it can't be expanded forever. the expansions it gets after the real Verso's death strain it heavily and literally cause the fabric of 'reality' to tear. it's not a real place, and the people in it aren't real people. for my XIV fans in the audience, they're Endless. painted Verso is the closest thing to a real human being in the canvas (besides the actual real people who're paying a visit) but this is purely because he's a kinda-sorta vessel for the real Verso's soul, and even THEN he admits outright he's just a fabrication that needs to be put down. i dunno man i'm already beginning to feel like i played a different Act 3 from everyone else lmao. the game isn't "obsessed with the setting's gods", it cares more about real people than fictional ones. like anyone should, really.

a commenter asked me why everything has so much nauseating exposition these days and i unfortunately wrote too much.
The average filmgoer/gamer has always been somewhat incurious and inattentive but the internet brought art to so, so many more people and thus added infinitely more voices to the chorus - including people who otherwise wouldn't have engaged with specific films and games. This in itself was not bad, but when it came time to make more money to offset the increasing cost of everything, studios slowly began optimizing their output for this newly discovered Average Consumer. Through this they realize that a not-insignificant amount of people either watch movies passively (on a second screen or while browsing their phone or while playing a game or whatever) or struggle to follow basic plot beats, so they coach their creatives to account for this. You then get exposition, quips and similar devices being used not because they're desired so much as they are needed for someone to, hypothetically, understand the entire plot while playing FTL: Faster Than Light on their main monitor. The concurrent problem that eventually becomes intertwined is that a generation who learned about devices and computers and games ended up rushing into having kids (as 20-somethings often do) and, remembering their fond childhood memories of sitting in front of a TV or Xbox all day when they were 7-9, begin offloading entertainment to devices... Starting at ages 1-3. This leads to an uncomfortable knock-on effect where kids who struggle to focus on things like family gatherings, friend hangouts, school, etc grow up into adults with either outright or pseudo-ADHD that makes them easily distracted and prone to focusing on other things. These adults grow up to become the target demographics of franchises that otherwise weren't targeted at kids, so a plague that initially started in children's TV (turning it into baby sensory videos) eventually made its way to adulthood. The key problem here isn't attention span, though, it's the inability to Play. Stripped of sandboxes or play pens or bouncy balls …
