As far as fares, dunno if technology has advanced since I was last there, but at least in 2017 or so the thing to do was to get a prepaid "Oyster Card" that you just tap at the gates when you enter and leave, though I think you'll need one for each person.

I'd call it easy, at least outside of rush hour. Maps everywhere, both in the stations and on board, good signage, trains run frequently enough that you don't have to think about the schedule, just go to the platform and wait for one to show up.

I've never managed to get myself lost on the tube.
