A couple of moms and I were chatting about this at swim lessons today. We described it as a hardening feeling
Very weird feeling this week to feel that I am learning to handle the trauma of this occupation better. Like wtf.

We got our first tentative agreement in negotiations today.

I will be listening to "Fight for Your Right" by the Beastie Boys for the afternoon cause that's how I'm feeling.

A win is a win.

This makes the Jan 23, 2026 action the largest strike in Minnesota History, and depending on which number you use, 3rd in American History after the massive national strikes of 1919, or the Great Railroad Strike of 1922. I note with extreme interest that mainstream media didn't report these facts.

We had another car in front of our house tonight.

Went out and knocked on the window.

Just a dude waiting for a friend down the block, was comfortable with moving.

Proud of myself for stepping up, and proud of the person in the car for also meeting me with kindness.

(confirmed not ICE)

Why yes, I did go outside in shorts and no shoes to take pictures of the ICE truck that was parked in front of our neighbors house.
January 28, 2026 at 3:06 AM
Saw ICE on our street and let me tell you the rapid response from people was overwhelming.

We're mourning yet again in Minnesota — and struggling to square the gut-churning video of Alex Pretti's final moments with official accounts.

I'm teaching techniques of neutralization this term, so I made this quick slide on the DHS statement. Share if it's useful. www.nytimes.com/live/2026/us...

MNHS finally decided they would be closed to the public! Thanks everyone ❤️
January 22, 2026 at 11:01 PM
Even with all the cultural institutions closing and with schools canceling field trips, MNHS is still choosing to stay open tomorrow. They do not care.
January 22, 2026 at 8:20 PM
Update: the MIA is planning on being closed tomorrow.

All MNHS sites (besides the library that had to be closed tomorrow due to not enough staff) are still actively planning on being open tomorrow.
The Science Museum of Minnesota is closing tomorrow.

The Bakken museum is closing tomorrow.

The Children's Museum of Minnesota is closing tomorrow.

Guess who is still twiddling their thumbs hoping no one notices? The Minnesota Historical Society.

Even more of note: employers cannot ask for a doctor's note for missing one scheduled work day.
Minnesota employees should keep in mind that if they have earned sick and safe time available, they can use it for mental health treatment on a single day, and their employer must allow it.

A convo I heard this morning:

- Are you sure you want to be outside? It's so cold!

- It's warm today! I'll be fine!

True Minnesotans right there.

My (nearly 3 year old) daughter is reporting to her daycare provider that there was a wet mouse in the laundry machine last night.

She is talking about Stuart Little.

I got overwhelmed at half price books and panicked. Here's what I grabbed 🤷
Plus a couple of Arthur books, and some "I can read" books.

The amount of women I've seen standing on corners is so heartwarming in this tundra.

Also know, when you can't help out (mentally, physically, etc) even waving to those on corners helps build community.
It legit seems like every single person (not hiding out of necessity) is doing some combo of:
- mutual aid
- school/daycare/neighborhood patrol
- holding things down at Whipple

We have been reading the same books for the last 4 years, and we are officially needing good picture books for our girls.

I'm hoping to go book shopping tomorrow, but can anyone give me ideas to keep my eye out for? Favorite oldies? Great new ones?

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

We love Minneapolis and St. Paul!
January 17, 2026 at 8:52 PM
Did the dude not realize that even in calm times, those people are too scared to go into Minneapolis anyways?

Not surprised only 10 people showed up.
January 17, 2026 at 8:43 PM
Richfield Public Schools have also followed suit.
Saint Paul follows Minneapolis:

"Due to safety concerns related to the increased presence of federal agents in the Twin Cities, Saint Paul Public Schools will be offering a temporary virtual learning option"

Require that Congress immediately end all of this, United States.

And #AbolishICE.
