If you have immigrants and trans people in your family or community, like I do, and are worried for them, here is a script I wrote and read to the staff of my Senators and House Rep. Feel free to use, edit and make your own. Note, I'm from Ohio so make sure you get your state correct.
I am calling because of my concern with President Trump's executive orders on his first day of office. Particularly his actions that describe immigrants entering the southern border as an invasion, eliminating the CBP One app, his need to say there are only 2 legitimate sexes and his pardoning of ALL the January 6th rioters. The January 6th rioters commited a crime and there is no denying it. It is insane that these people whose actions led to the deaths of law enforcement should be denied the full passage of justice that was given by the fair courts of law. Regarding immigrants and transgendered people, the President does not seem to understand or care that these are ALL human beings. His rhetoric and potentially his actions are going to unnecessarily endanger the lives of these people. Immigrants should be given the appropriate infrastructure to enter the country legally. To deny them that by shutting down the CBP One app, that allowed legal entry, will only exacerbate the problem. Transgendered people, including children, should not be forced into classifications they feel infringe on their rights and should be able to receive the treatment they need to pursue happiness. While I cannot share some of the context of being an immigrant or transgendered person, I can empathize because they are part of my family and my community. And because of that I am scared. I worry about their livelihood and the potential for bullying and violence the President's language and character will enable. All the people of Ohio, including immigrants and transgendered people, especially the children, are relying on you to uphold checks and balances. The President may be your ally, maybe your friend, but your duty necessitates keeping the President in check.
