If you want to turn a grayscale image colorful, you can adjust R, G, & B separately. Here I've left the first two alone and bumped up the floor for blue.
Paint.NET is pretty good freeware as far as raster image editing goes. For publication quality you do want a vector program (I second Affinity).

Levels basically maps the RGB values of each pixel to a new value. For gray it's easy - you just raise the floor so that pixels with 0 luminosity end up mapping to, e.g. 78 luminosity.

This is Skeletron from Terraria. He'll try and kill you, but not for ideological reasons. You don't have to worry about Skeletron being racist (he hates all colors equally I think) but you do need to defeat him before dawn or you'll have a problem.

I never knew sawflies got this big or so fearsome looking until I found this pigeon tremex (Siricidae: Tremex columba) stationed doggedly on a New Jersey sidewalk. I tried moving her out of the way of traffic with a leaf; she beat her wings powerfully and returned to her post. Strange little beast.
