took a math grad course in chaos, and did well there ( even nailed most of the proofs, for a change )
To me the mystery of neural nets is the non-linear ( ex: sombrero ) function on the weighted sum. That takes it out of the "safe" linear world, chaos possible if feedback involved.

ML and AI both big-tentish; I worked on a ML project that was supposed to connect customer records from multiple systems to create a "source of truth" database.
But that algorithm was pretty straight-forward, pattern matching with rules engine.
