Life is short and I don't get paid to be on BS so I block liberally and freely.
that's awesome. What a great community, a place where even the pharmacist knows your voice and can run the product over :)

School lunches, at least where I live, are more than just white flour, sugar, process[ed] cheese, canned potatoes, dried milk.

And what evidence is there that these are the only products that would be available at a govt grocery store? Military commissaries are govt run grocery stores. They have more than just white flour, sugar, process[ed] cheese, canned potatoes, dried milk.

possibly they are a libertarian?

also I have never lived in a place where most restaurants did food delivery. Pizza parlors, yes. A couple Chinese restaurants. But that was it. My extended family in the rural southwest never had any delivery options. Not even pizza. I think this was highly dependent on where people lived.

wait so if you don't have a car, you can't get a job at that pharmacy? or do they use public transit?

I assume they are somewhere between 15 - 22 years old and think they know everything. This is one possible and likely explanation.

there is a "little free library" in the neighborhood over with a sign that says NOT A FREE LIBRARY. LEAVE A BOOK, TAKE A BOOK. And like most little free libraries, it's in a fairly affluent neighborhood where people have access to "real" libraries and can afford to buy books if they want them.

She is not opposed to food delivery. She is pointing out that it is a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, a brick and mortar store and also pointing out the food delivery, at least at present, depends on paying people very poorly.

What evidence is there that the government want you to have those things? Military commissaries are govt run grocery stores. They have more than just white flour, sugar, process[ed] cheese, canned potatoes, dried milk. Why would a civilian govt run grocery store be limited to those things?
November 27, 2025 at 4:10 PM
so much to unpack here but ... isn't white flour, sugar, process[ed] cheese, canned potatoes, dried milk, etc a group of "ethnically preferred foods"?

por que no los dos?

Thinking that it is an absolute travesty to be in a situation where one 1) has a car and 2) needs to drive it for 15 minutes to accomplish given errand or social activity is also a disease amongst the 20 somethings who are very online.

This is in addition to the fact that many families on food stamps can't necessarily count on having $35 available at any given moment.
November 27, 2025 at 4:03 PM
My extended family is from the rural southwest. There is no Walmart in their town. There is a 7/11 that offers a limited selection of groceries. Otherwise, the nearest grocery store is a Fry's, and it's 45 min away.

I wonder if the folks "isolated" in the affluent neighborhoods frame this as a positive thing, or like it?
November 25, 2025 at 3:53 PM
Agreed. 1. We don't know for a fact that they only leave for work, unless we're spying on them and 2. some people actually like that for whatever reason.

I would add that we don't have nearly enough *affordable* walkable urbanism, which sadly is a luxury item in the vast majority of US cities.

Absent rent control, AirBnB limitations or prohibitions, bans on rent fixing software, and meaningful efforts to prevent construction to be used as a conduit for money laundering, more housing doesn't necessarily mean cheaper housing, as we've seen over and over.
November 20, 2025 at 3:36 PM
point being: new upzoning only leads to low rents if the new buildings are themselves offered at affordable rents, and if there are protections in place for existing renters (like rent control, or prohibitions on AirBnB).
