They've been legalized in Oregon and decriminalized in Colorado, DC, and a few counties in CA and WA, but is still illegal federally.

What's crazy is that all that luxury still only represents a tiny fraction of their wealth. Maintenance costs on all that are < $100M/year in most cases, setup costs under $1B. The rest goes to bringing the world to heel.

None of them, especially the "useful" ones, are actually commercially viable though. Every one of those services is running at a massive loss, trying to create a captive audience before they're forced to add a zero or 2 to all their prices or praying for govt subsidies.

Conservatives can't get off unless they're doing something illicit or better yet illegal, so it's the latter desperate to convince people of the former.

I was a fool. I read The Twisted Ones and thought it was spooky but fascinating and maybe a bit scary near the end and so a couple years later I figured I'd read The Hollow Places and jeezus h christ on a pogo stick @tkingfisher.com I have never felt such dread at the words "52% complete".

I haven't seen the latest episode yet, but so far I'm still on the fence about whether the world's already been saved. Maybe I'm just too transhuman to not see a benevolent and cooperative human collective as positive and how Stepford-coded it is as a potential fakeout.

As someone whose employer was eaten and thoroughly enshitified by Salesforce, this is entirely accurate. They will absolutely build an arcology where everyone is monitored 24/7 by an AI named v3Mom to maximize productivity.

It was very pretty. Im glad I didn't squash it when I grabbed the branch it was on while hiking. Couldn't use that hand for 2 days.
