Former medic, former prison counselor, former criminal defense investigator, former almost academic, photographer, writer of detective fiction, Edgar Award winner.
I used to write the Sunday Salons--essays about photographers as a prompt for #photography discussions.

This piece, from 2007, is on Ralph Meatyard--one of those WTF photographers (which, okay, isn't an actual genre of photography, but ought to be).

William Kent, the Principal Painter in Ordinary to King George II, said, "Nature abhors a straight line." Aristotle said, "Nature abhors a vacuum." I suspect Nature is a lot more forgiving than folks credit.

This is the plant you'd find in the window of the office of a 1940s hard-boiled detective. In 3 weeks it'll be dead. Suspiciously.

Forget Secretary of Defense. Double forget Secretary of War.

This is the Secretary of Dense, only partly because we think he should get the F out of here.

Yesterday's bike ride along the railroad tracks, through the Valley of Warehouses, chilly but so pleasant.

Not far from where I live is an area I call the Valley of Warehouses. I'm told it used to be farmland; now it's massive warehouses and data centers. An intercity bike trail threads through the area.

I used to write the Sunday Salons--essays about photographers as a prompt for #photography discussions.

This piece, from 2007, is on Japanese photographer Shomei Tomatsu, one of those "who knows more than they care to about things they cannot afford to believe in."

I don't shoot a lot of landscapes, but this felt like it was inside a John Prine song.

So here's me having lunch in a small town diner, trying to ignore this animated discussion at the next table...then I figure out they're arguing about which Elder Scrolls game is better, Skyrim or Oblivion.

From 2006 to 2017 I wrote a series of short essays about photographers--some well-known, some obscure--as a platform for #photography discussions called the Sunday Salons.

This piece, from 2006, is on Lewis Hine, documentary photographer & muckraker.

I suspect the true secret to happiness is simply to find a sunny spot and sit down in it.

Cats know this.

Yesterday was the 65th anniversary of six-year-old Ruby Bridges being escorted into Frantz Elementary School by US Marshals. In 1964, this painting ('The Problem We All Live With') by Norman Rockwell was published in LOOK magazine.

The painting is still shocking. And still needs to be seen.
