The European Commission seems hell-bent on removing hard-won protections for people's health, nature, human rights, labour rights and privacy – basically anything that powerful industries feel hurts their profits

This deregulation drive is hugely irresponsible – is it also illegal?
Deregulation plans break EU law, legal scholars warn
Over one hundred legal experts have warned that the EU’s Omnibus I package, which cuts green and social reporting rules, breached EU law and was "likely to be annulled" if adopted.

EU governments have proposed a watered-down climate target, that won't cut carbon pollution fast enough and is full of loopholes to weaken it more

The EU Parliament's environment committee is about to approve a basically unchanged target

Even the EU's own advisers say this is a major risk

EU’s weakened climate target raises risk of missing net-zero, top adviser warns
Chair of bloc’s science advisory board also dismissed industry calls to scrap carbon pricing.

Politicians at the #COP30 climate summit can decide whose side they're on

The ordinary people suffering the loss of their lives, homes and livelihoods?

Or the fossil fuel companies and other high-polluting industries raking in obscene profits by fueling this destruction?
Typhoon Kalmaegi (local name Tino) brought in devastating floods across the Visayas region of the Philippines, killing over 100 people and destroying millions worth of public and private infrastructure.

Oil and gas companies, big tech, industrial farming and food, the chemical industry, car companies, the financial sector – all have armies of lobbyists pushing to weaken protections for people and nature, to boost their profit margins

There must be a watchdog on law-making, to hold power to account
What happens after Europe's NGOs are dismantled?
What does Europe look like when independent civil society is silenced, sidelined or slowly starved out of existence? This is not dystopian fiction. It is the logical end-point of a trend already visib...

What would you say to someone who thinks the EU-Mercosur deal is just about economic opportunity?

Dinamam Tuxá @apiboficial.bsky.social is an Indigenous leader of the Tuxá people, from the Tuxá Indigenous Land in Brazil. He came to Brussels to tell EU leaders exactly why the deal is so harmful.

The EU's environment ministers have agreed a proposed climate target for 2040 that is much lower than what even the EU's own science advisers called for

The EU-Mercosur trade deal is a threat to the climate, to forests, to workers and to your health

Not only that but the way the Commission is pushing the deal through is anti-democratic and undermines rule of law

National parliaments will be sidelined so MEPs must #StopEUMercosur!

The European Commission wants to open up the EU's chemical safety rules (REACH)

Maybe a Hallowe'en screening of the #ecohorror film Safe is in order...
"It's in the air, in the water, in our homes"

Safe could have been an ad for the EU's REACH legislation (no, wait, it's fun!) showing how surrounded we are by potentially toxic chemicals
