This is purely anecdotal and seems to be from people whining about not getting personal service from the planning/building department. They deal with hundreds/thousands of permits a year.

That's not how that works. Private companies are contracted ahead of time. There are legal timelines set by law which can only be paused when additional information is necessary. Private review is used to "reduce costs" for gov'ts that can't pay enough staff.

This list is complete bullshit. Carter *ended* the funding to Somoza and any links to Pol Pot are extremely tenuous at best. US backing of the Khmer Rouge didn't ramp up until after Carter was out of office.

They were cost effective because of massive government loans with almost no interest on them, tied to the expansion of the highway system. That, combined with the lower price on land outwith cities made it economically enticing. The crackdown on greenfield development has made it less profitable.

It's already been legalized in all of California. Almost no applications were even submitted. The major issue is developers won't build their way out of a profit, which is why public housing is necessary.
