An excerpt from something I'm working on that I think turned out pretty neat. This is still my first pass at this passage, but I think I hit on something effective.

(forgive me for drafting in comic sans, but it helps me Get Over Myself and get the damn words on the page)
A short excerpt from some kind of story, given without any context from the author. It is written entirely in Comic Sans MS. It reads: Strangely enough, the first idea that comes to my mind is not of any creature natural or biological, but from dusted tomes from Earth of Old. Medieval monks scrawling in margins of ill-formed books, struggling to portray through image alone the nature of the world around them. It looks like a demon from scriptures ancient; a warning found between passages of sin and brimstone; a caricature of its own being. "Isn't it wonderful?" she asks. In a strictly literal sense, I am forced to agree.

The idea of living in a RPG-based fantasy world is such a fundamentally unbelievable premise that it's often dismissed out of hand.

So why do we continue to tell those kinds of stories anyway?

An excerpt from the novel 'Mythic-Rarity Raid Drops,' written by the poster. It reads: The mere notion of being summoned to live in a video game world, however, is laughable on its face. It takes nary a moment's thought to parse out any number of contrivances or contortions that would need to occur for such a world to exist at all--and that's without even considering the fact that such a place depends a priori on innately human concepts and ideas. No confluence of natural law will ever bring about the existence of experience points; no set of physical principles will ever allow a monster's body to melt neatly away into a pile of legally recognized tender. But what's worse is when the author won't even allow the fantasy that such a world exists apart from our own. The idea that one could live within a video game itself--a piece of software that exists purportedly within our world-- defies expectation so far as to be eminently unbelievable. It requires far too many leaps of faith to be swallowed by even the most generous reader, and what good is a disbelief suspended so far as to be unrecognizable? What is the point of invoking systems so arcane and strange as to be functionally incompatible with the real world? How could anyone possibly relate to such a fundamentally unbelievable tale? And just what does it mean that I find myself the subject of one?

Spying an unfortunate pack of yeti-spawn hiding in the nearby tundra, I raise my sword and quickly slice each of them through. HE WHO HAS A WHY TO LIVE CAN BEAR ALMOST ANY LOADING TIME, booms the weapon. "Gravity--" TO LIVE IS TO SUFFER, AND TO SURVIVE IS TO FIND SOME BROKEN-ASS EQUIPMENT IN THE SUFFERING. "Would you please just--" WHOEVER FIGHTS MONSTERS SHOULD SEE TO IT THAT IN THE PROCESS THEY DO NOT BECOME OVERLEVELED FOR THE AREA.

a storefront in the wee, dark hours of the morning. stools and chairs are visible in the front windows, resting inverted atop tables and countertops. by all accounts, this storefront is obviously closed; and yet, a single, bright, neon "OPEN" sign seems to claim otherwise.
