I work for a travel magazine and get a lot of press releases. Most are about destinations, cruise ships, and restaurants — things like that. This one just came in.

My hand, which is about six inches middle finger to wrist, supporting a veritable log of carrot, almost as wide as my hand and at least an inch below my wrist, at its end… which is BROKEN OFF. This monster was originally somehow longer. It seems like two and a half, maybe three Gerbers baby-food jars stacked end to end. If it was a spiny lobster, I think it might be legal size to keep. I have eaten whole sweet potatoes smaller than this, may I remind you, broken fragment of a carrot. Why does the Presidente stock them so big? How?

Brown water like oversteeped tea spreading around gnarled roots on the bank. Is something hiding there? The sun is bright, the shadows deep. Cypress knees form a miniature forest spreading between the colossal columns of adult trees, poking up in the shadows and leaf litter. The sun blazes into a distant clearing, illuminating a cabbage palm behind the cypresses.
