Enjoyed visiting Taylor’s University this morning. Great to catch up with Gazi Mahabubul Alam and make plans for some joint research. Looking forward to the next stage of this collaboration.

I asked a Large Language Model, #LLM, to generate a SWOT (Strengths , Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis for #PredatoryPublishing. I asked it to look at it s if it was a predatory publisher. Here is what it said.

Looking at the Journal of Clinical Case Reports Medical Images and Health Sciences (JCRMHS) (ISSN: 2832-1286). I received this email (the highlight is theirs, not mine).

I'll be taking a closer look at the journal in future posts.

I received this email from Austin Journal of Clinical Case Reports (ISSN: 2381-912X), published by the Austin Publishing Group.

The journals says that it has an impact factor of 3.28 but it is not obvious (may not even be stated) where this impact comes from.

I received this email from Austin Journal of Clinical Case Reports (ISSN: 2381-912X), published by the Austin Publishing Group.

I wonder what recent publications of mine that are referring to as I have never published a clinical paper?

It's perhaps a little ironic that this recent (or should that be future, as it is being published in 2026?) is getting some remarks on #PubPeer.

The article is available here: buff.ly/5kXkGEh

You can see the PuPeer comments here: buff.ly/09q65qO, but I'll pick up on a few points.

Just looked at the top publishing authors in 2025 (so far). These are the top five. Not saying that there is anything wrong, but jut like to have a data point whenever I remember to do it.

Was just looking around and I saw this paper. To be honest I was shocked.

I have seen some strange things reported in peer reviewed papers but allegations of murder - that is a first for me.

Went to KLGCC this morning just to have a look at Kuala Lumpur’s shopping mall (cos we need more 😜). These are the views from the very top floor. Not too shabby.

I am sure that most of us can recognise a calendar like this - walls of green blocks, back-to-back meetings, and hardly any time to think, plan, or simply “do the day job”.

Nice to get a few more citations, two of them to my articles on hyper-heuristics.

"The Drain of Scientific Publishing"

I don't often post preprints as I'd rather wait for the peer reviewed version to appear, but I do make exceptions - and this is one of them. I really hope that this make it through peer review

I was at Korea University last week and saw a rainbow in a fountain. Not sure if that was by design, or I was just lucky - but glad to see it.

I’ve been reflecting lately on how careers evolve. Sometimes it’s not about climbing higher, but about shifting perspective. Not always looking for that next position, instead seeing where your experience can have the most impact. 🧵

Always nice to get a citation to one of my papers and I really appreciate a citation to this paper, as this is the first paper I published on predatory publishing and this was the starting point of my research into this fascinating area.

Recently, I posted about a reseacher that had a sudden rise in both articles and citations.

This post has generated some interest, with differing views which, of course, is what should happen.

I spent last week at the QS Quacquarelli Symonds conference in Seoul, where the 2026 QS Asia Rankings were announced. This post shows the 40 Malaysian institutions that were ranked in 2025 and have received new rankings on 2026.

Not quite sure why I looked so shocked/miserable as it was great to see Ian Jones at the recent QS conference. Or paths can be traced back towhen we both worked at the University of Nottingham but we also lived very near each other and used to see each other to/from work. But that was many years ago

I was in Seoul recently, at a QS conference hosted by Korea University. They really do have a fantastic looking campus - and this is only a very small part of it. Wish I had more time to explore the library, museum etc. perhaps next time.

When posting a Google Scholar profile, should I show the identity?

I recently posted about a Google Scholar profile that had seen a sudden increase in citations.

Some commentors said that I should not post things like this, or at least I should not identify the person.

At last weeks conference in Seoul, where the 2026 QS Asia Rankings were announced, MILA University was delighted to enter the Asia rankings for the first time.

We enter with nine other Malaysiam institutions. The graph shows how we compare against these other new entrants.

Recently signed an MOU with a valued partner in Indonesia. These are formal/informal events (if you get what I mean). They are not usually the time for lots of jokes.
... that said, I cannot recall what I found so amusing at this event - but I think it was better for it.
