Idiot moonlighting as a computer scientist moonlighting as a statistician
I think acceptance for me looks like going along with this and hating my working life until i am made unemployed or an opportunity to pay rent with something that doesnt make me want to kill myself arises

Well any profession that i could be good at

I feel this sense of urgency to change career but i cant forsee a profession that wont be pushed towards automating anything that can be good enough

I am no longer a programmer by profession but increasingly the computer is a place i go to and feel gross. I hate interacting with chatbots, even if they can solve my problems.

It's either this or basically no more open spaces on the internet in my mind? Even stuff like wikipedia? In my head we dont actually manage to do something like that so I guess enjoy it while it lasts?

We are slowly reaching divine comedy levels of ironic tragedy. Metastatic Hitler contrarians in a box and, soon enough, deployable on consumer grade hardware. Truly, a breakthrough for human cognition and civilizational advancement.

I honestly want to get out of anything computery now just so I don't have to deal with how stupid this could get
February 12, 2026 at 6:41 PM
This is the first thing that's really made me pause. All the things that are going to need to change now to deal with the volume of low quality engagement that can now happen. I really don't see this ending well at all

"What if your misbehaving dog with boundless energy could negatively impact important societal functions?" doesn't exactly make me excited about all this

As a brown man utd fan from Manchester this one has left me staring out into the ocean. Nevermind any of the people who live in old Trafford that disagree or are affected by it. We barely matter

I get a lot of good use from this one for prediction markets but technically he did return twice so....

Amazing thanks!

This feels like such an infuriating waste of time and energy to delay this

Park Row can get pretty congested as is? Is there anything commissioned or publicly available on the increased traffic around the hospital?

Bringing it back i guess my query is over whether the american local provisions or participation in areas with a pro yimby sentiment are different or if you think that the primary factor is race to the exlcusion of all else?

Can you explain the water rates bit?
January 23, 2026 at 10:33 AM
I think (b) phrases it well. I am unhappy with my local provision and planning objections appear to be the most efficient vehicle for civic pariticpation in my frame of reference

I am aware from someone in PINS that governance may have more to do with it though www.bbc.com/news/uk-engl...
Planning applications can bypass Bristol City Council after it loses powers
Developers can apply directly to the government after Bristol City Council was stripped of powers.

I can only speak to the anecdotal local context in bristol but nimbyism seems to be a mix of well off older people objecting on some bizarre civic grounds (see zoo), or, to me at least, an anachronistic bit about luxury housing
January 23, 2026 at 10:22 AM
I think it also relates to your point about yimbyism being a right wing thing here. I couldnt tell you why but its a marked difference that we dont really have the same kind of young left wing urban wonks (or if they exist, i dont know about them )
