“All clear.” The words are meant to reassure. They should reassure me after her thorough search. But the alarm system in my brain blares on in perverse persistence, like that DJ at my cousin’s wedding that refused to play anything but EDM. Just because I caught the slightest movement out of the corner of my eye, my brain is convinced that there’s something out there that will harm me. It doesn’t know exactly what, but it has plenty of suggestions all presented in stuttering dubstep: sa-sa-sa-serial killers, ra-ra-ra-rabies, ex-plo-sives. Just wait for the beat drop. Stupid brain.

“There’s someone new out on the corner.” Suddenly I’m awake. Someone new on the same day that Lewis was murdered. It might be a coincidence, but it also might not. I wrestle out of a nest of fleece and flannel. What I’d meant as a short ‘power’ nap to fuel a full afternoon of work had turned into more of a bear going into hibernation kind of rest. I should have known that would happen, considering how my body craves fuzzy blankets and deep slumber this time of year. I pull my foot free and then I’m making my way to the living room and peeking through the slit in the curtains. Sure enough, there’s a stranger on our corner, talking with Gabby. “Isn’t she cool?” asks Alex. “What if she’s a murderer?” The tall woman certainly looks tough with her Doc Martens and salt and pepper pixie. “It’s Friday, I’m sure she’s just your run-of-the-mill, normal visitor.” Sweet, optimistic Alex. I hate doing it, but I open up the curtains so the woman can see me as well. If she is dangerous, I want her to know that I see her with Gabby.

Spore bombs in place, Quin had a tight window of time to get into position for the delivery. He slipped out one of the inconspicuous side entrances of the newest and tallest building in the city and threw the inspector's vest in a compost bin. Stepping into a narrow alley, he took off his jacket and when he exited, he wore it inside out. He ran a hand through his short dark hair a few times, mussing it before entering the Buzzy Brew. Soft blue light from bioluminescent lanterns bathed the counter, a nest of bramble branches holding up a smooth slab of wood. "If it isn't our favorite regular," greeted Bloom. Her smile and tone suggested cheerfulness, but her lichen told another story. Over the last few weeks the short stalks and caps that encircled her neck like a fairy ring had gone from a striking turquoise to dull grey. Her photobiont hadn't been getting enough sunlight and the cafe hadn't been getting as many customers. Not since Chlorophyll Industries had decided to cast this neighborhood into shadow with their newest skyscraper. "You want the usual?"

The bell jingles and almost immediately there’s movement at my feet. I swerve, knocking into a table, glimpse a second cat and have to hop out of the way, bumping into a couple of chairs. A third cat comes in for the kill. Before I fall flat on my ass for the second time today, a warm hand catches my elbow. Reflexively, I grab the arms in front of me, steadying myself. “You okay?” asks August. We’re standing so close, that I can’t help but look into his eyes. Like really observe them. They’re blue with rings of brown around the irises and currently they’re filled with concern. I don’t like that. It’s disconcerting. “I’m fine,” I let go of soft green stitches and solid biceps to step away from him, which isn’t easy with the way the cats are weaving at my feet.

“Thank you.” I sit up a little straighter and smooth out my shirt. I put a lot of effort into matching my eyes to my shirt and hardly anyone ever notices. They’re always too busy asking who I am, and depending on how far things have progressed and how difficult they’re being, why I’m strapping them to a table.
