In essence, it is like chunking rubric categories and not doing the math to have a final grade. It helps learners focus on progress in skill and content knowledge areas. The grades mean something rather than appearing as a value judgment.

I switched to standards based grading in my own classroom long before common core and systematized sbg.

This is one of my favorite passages of Walden. I use it to teach enjambment. Groups of students create poems using mostly only these words. Every group always has a different poem. Then we look at the work the line breaks are doing in their creations. 📖
