MG and YA reader, curator of learning experiences, parent, executive function coach, baker, and poet. I work toward a more just world with little choices every day.
Looking to update high school ELA novels for lit circles with more culturally responsive and diverse authors/perspectives. Gr 8/9 bins are looking especially dated! For gr 9/10, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline are definite keepers. Suggestions?

As a teacher in Canada, one thing I'm really curious about right now is what the lessons look like in American middle and high school social studies classes. Are kids still being taught that there's a system of "checks and balances," and that the US constitution is a glorious and flawless document?

In case you were wondering how social studies standards get made, (in Texas at least) this thread is full of the nitty gritty details. Also, someone needs to order @drwhit.bsky.social a pizza.
Chairman Kinsey says that they're going to soldier through Items 7 and 8 and requested dinner be ordered. I should probably take a cue.

.. what color is history?

I always used red for history in school.
A bit of lighthearted fun. What colour would you put as a book cover for mathematics?

🗺 A good example of why teaching #medialiteracy matters.
"A massive Swedish study examined hormonal birth control risks. But the nuances of such studies get lost on social media."
Comment: nuances were lost also in traditional media-outlets and the initial press-release by Uppsala University
A Swedish study found hormonal birth control is safe overall but shows a small breast cancer risk increase during use. TikTok claims it causes cancer as dangerous as smoking. Originally published by @kffhealthnews.org

In case you are that teacher for someone like Anna and her friends.
Middle school sucked for me, as it did most people my age. 9/11 happened smack in the middle of it, we were in a disgustingly conservative suburb of a military town that kind of operated like a small town.

However. My 8th grade social studies teacher is probably the reason a bunch of us survived.

Cannot recommend this book highly enough: it takes history education seriously and is a history of ideas about it - it’s also a powerful philosophical enquiry.

Empathy and History @berghahnbooks.bsky.social—the principal arguments:

1) Empathy designates the attempt to grasp the 'context' in which people’s actions made sense

2) The methodological question raised by empathy concerns the way in which this 'context' enters a historical explanation 1/2
