Complaints about Buddhist monks being just thugs and bandits are a pretty persistent theme in 16th century Japanese writing, to the point where you see a lot of admiration for the Jesuits specifically for being actually pious and ascetic.

Bonus #MapMonday, this one is based off of a short story I read years ago where there was a nuclear war in the 1980s and the Non-Aligned Movement ended up as the world's dominant powers. Unfortunately, cannot remember the title or the author, but it was pretty good I think!

She's still really upset that the defectors were mean to her too. Reminds me of Ann Freedman, who in the Netflix documentary about the Knoedler forgery scandal was still genuinely outraged that one of her colleagues reported the gallery for selling forged paintings, even though it 100% totally was.

If I discovered and invented a revolutionary new suite of psychological technologies that allowed people to self-actualize their ambitions and take conscious control of their emotional state of mind, I would simply then not turn it into an anorexic sex cult.

If we ever create a society that has eliminated material needs and hierarchy I do think it'll have a very different relationship to criminal justice than ours, but you're also positing such a different world at that point that I don't think you have much to contribute to politics right now.

The reason that modern societies have so much trouble dealing with "private" forms of abuse is that the idea that you, as an individual, have a right to state protection against your spouse or father or family or community is relatively new, and depends on an impersonal system of justice.
