TIL: if a World Series game has not concluded by the scheduled start of the next game, each inning from that start time onward counts towards each game simultaneously, like a bowling frame's results being carried back to a prior strike/spare.

Server Charms are tiny, portable microcontroller setups made with recycled vape batteries. They create their own Wi-Fi network, inviting curious people to connect with their devices where a captive portal opens, leading to small webpages.

the problem is, in fact, that Signal chose to run on AWS, & specifically chose to make AWS US-East-1 their SPOF.
that Signal's Prez chooses buck-passing antitrust polemics, rather than a technical postmortem & plan to do better next time, is not a positive signal for Signal's future reliability.

In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/

it is worthwhile to recognize how rapidly 'scholarship' manufactured to flatter power, in this current, salient case.
and also, …
and also, …
Just to take stock: the first claim was that there was an entire literature supporting the anti-birthright position. Then, *after* that claim, scholars emerged to post drafts on SSRN. And *now* the government points to a "growing body of modern scholarship" all drafted after the initial claim.
A LITERATURE IS BORN!

'Weekend at Bernie's 2025' - the corpse stays in a basement the whole time, but our young heroes still throw the party, misdirect the mobsters, jail the hitman & win the girl – all by using Bernie's cellphone & generative AI to convince others Bernie's still alive.
so what is the difference between making an AI simulacrum of a dead person and puppeteering their actual physical preserved corpse?

this option strikes me as extremely hostile to honest discourse.
in particular, by whatever principle that justifies someone limiting replies to "their" posts, they also deserve notification if someone *is* replying, altering & extending something they said.

This reverse Turing Test video is one of the more unsettling pieces of AI content I've seen. The perspective of being an Other in which their mannerisms are normal in an embodied setting is quite spooky.

Hah. You know what would be funny? A set of lists you could subscribe to that automatically mute accounts at like, 4k, 5k, 10k following sizes. Could bring back that "small internet" vibes by force.
