Historically, American Catholic bishops weren't this united in opposing slavery or supporting civil rights. They aren't this united in opposing birth control, and that's American Catholicism's main thing. That's how obviously evil Trump's immigration policy is.

The one exception I'll make (because of course, I'm the final arbiter of what is right) is for the very local "Pull an tag from this tree and buy the present that a kid specifically asked for, then drop it along with this tag into a box" things. You get the good feelings *and* it's efficient-ish.

"We're going to put together hygiene kits for people in Africa" always killed me, as it was an annual thing at my church and no matter how many times someone (often me) brought up "Taking that money and donating it will be 10x more effective and helpful", that didn't make people ~feel~ as good. 🫠
