I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale. I'm not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me hidefdoritos replied: OP I hope you know that this changed my life and nearly eliminated my guilt over enjoying things. And I've delighted almost everyone I know with the phrase, leading a few of them to use it back to me. Anyway just letting you know about this little sparkle of wonder. For morale.

I'm busy trying to figure out what?? how?? so l haven't even gotten to why?? yet. And all at once she flips over, and deposits this fly, which is I dunno potentially a few weeks worth of food to her, still untouched, directly in front of me. And leaves it there. So feeling like a complete fool, I try what people who keep them as pets say they do to communicate, and I wiggle my fingers in front of my face in a way that supposedly mimics "happy" or "interested" or "I too am a spider" or something along those lines. AND I WILL BE DAMNED IF THIS SPIDER DIDNT CELEBRATE LIKE ZEPHRAM COCHRAN JUST MADE FIRST CONTACT She runs around waving those fuzzy little front legs, she lets me see her do some jumps (apparently this is both a compliment, and showing off) and then we vibed for about half hour there, watching the rain outside the screen and listening to music. I don't blame you if you're skeptical, but y'all... we check on each other daily. I offer new potential toys, she critiques them (if she likes them she'll be waiting by them for me the next day - if not, she'll avoid them or slowly touch them with one or two legs, and then find a surprisingly clear way to communicate, "Thanks I hate it!" So her name is Charlotte (but she goes by Char), and we haven't had a mosquito or a fly in the room since she moved in - except the plump dead ones she occasionally leaves me, always in the same spot. Not exactly shiny objects dropped from feathered wings in the sky, but you know what? I appreciate her for it no less. No less at all. Sometimes when you're really serious about learning something, the teachers come in surprising packages. Stories from the Sanctuary CW: spider (but if you have arachnophobia, reading this might actually help) As most of y’all know, a little less than a year ago we moved to this property that is essentially a small abandoned orchard. Here in southern Louisiana, the swamp is constantly moving to take back the land, so it doesn’t take much time for it to get uninhabitable if you don’t work with it. As someone with whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, I turned my attention to learning about all things green and growy out of both interest, and self-preservation. Pulling out my college microecology texts and browsing internet forums on everything from flowers and mushrooms to entomology and herpetology appeals to my ADHD, and there is always SO much more to learn. This rabbit hole is a whole warren, and it goes on forever. One bit of random information that caught my attention was stories of birds like magpies befriending humans and bringing them shiny… things or pretty pebbles as gifts. Charming, right? Who doesn't want wild birb buddies! So we decided to see if we could create an open outdoor aviary. No enclosure, just an area the birds already naturally like, where we toss some seeds and also let the wild native flora grow. It's working great, as far as attracting birds and other pollinators and wildlife, so I sit at the window nearest to it often to watch them (yes I am secretly 90 years old). Now, I told you all that so I could tell you this: If you want to attract wildlife, you have to be open to attracting ALL the wildlife, right? If I'm out in the aviary area cropping grass and spreading pesticides, I'm working against my own intentions there. So within reason, we're trying to avoid killing anything that doesn't really need to die. Thave yet to receive any gifts from birds (although they will absolutely ring my doorbell if they think it's been too long between… birdseeds). But something else did happen in this windowsill from where I watch, and it seems at least worthy of note: a little jumping spider has very noticeably decided to plant her flag and settle in. I'd already read a few things about jumping spiders in my pursuits, because they are common household critters. I recalled that they present no danger to humans, and some folx keep them as pets due to their apparent intelligence and evidence of personality. That knowledge existed in my mind basically theoretically. Frankly it never occurred to me to take it very seriously one way or another, but here I was. It seemed like a good opportunity to test some knowledge, so l set out to try a few things l'd read about. I remembered that they need water but will actually drown in any standing water, and that they like to climb vertically more than horizontally. So I dipped one end of a Q-tip in water and set it up in a… corner of the sill, whence I promptly got distracted and forgot about all of it. The next day, when I got up and opened the shade, there she was, waiting on the Q-tip. 1 thought "oh look at that!" and immediately ADHD'd out again. I was at the same window watching birds later that day when something caught my eye. She was slowly descending from the frame of the window screen down in front of my face. (Turns out it's hard to miss a spider who has decided to get your attention.) So that's what catches my eye. And then suddenly she just cuts the silk or whatever, and drops, full force, onto her back on the window ledge in front of me, and just lies there. Very dramatic. I have no idea what I'm watching. Did I somehow hurt her, am I watching the spider die? She stays there for a second...and then y'all, from I swear to Arachne I know not where, she pulls out a Whole. Entire. Ass. Fruit fly. Girl. Damn.
