Her performance was sexy psychopath from a cheesy nineties thriller. But she wasn't wrong. I had shown only a ready willingness to let her manipulate me. I said her bossing me around was my job description after all, and she said, Exactly, that's what I mean! You get it. And that was how I wound up wearing Rose Patten's top, and her gold necklace, to the big party.

I stepped onto the platform, and together we coaxed the dress up over her hips. It didn't split, but it was plenty snug. We were close enough to each other that I could smell her sweat, sharp and sweet. The purple dress was a strange choice for an audition, but I hoped Vernon would be wrong. I was rooting for Sugar Callahan.

Over the years I've learned some things about the Art that is spelled with a capital A, not the assembly line, small-a art of the sort they hang on the walls of this crap hotel. The most important thing to remember is that capital-A Art is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, and some people will go to great lengths to own it. Unscrupulous people have been known to sell forgeries of their Art in order to make money on it while also hoarding the real thing. A strange fetish, those subterranean locked rooms with their Warhol or their O'Keeffe or their Rembrandt. Audience of one. The bottom line is that capital-A Art is only for the people who can afford it, the ones who need somebody like me to run things for them, make sure their flowers are fresh, their floors so clean they could eat off them, their refrigerator arranged in ordered rows. Whatever their kink, I'm their girl.

Another ruddy-cheeked young woman (no name tag), sat on a stool next to an antique cash register. Lining the three rough hewn shelves on the right hand wall were Ball jars of dark colored jams (whether labeled strawberry or blackberry, the color was the same) and various pickled vegetables looking like biological specimens. On the left wall were three other shelves full of hand-labeled potions and jars of what seemed to be cooking herbs. Bay leaves, caraway seeds, cinnamon, clove and coriander. She decided it was only polite to buy something, so she picked out a jar of the black jam but those pale white asparagus spears looked like fat fingers swimming in cloudy formaldehyde. The vibe of the place gave her the creeps. Meanwhile, Fay was chatting up the young woman at the register. When Andie approached to purchase her jam, Fay turned, her eyes wide with faux alarm. "Someone's been leaving bags of flaming shit on doorsteps!" She turned back to the girl. "Tell my friend your theory," she said. "Go ahead." The girl glanced toward Andie, refusing eye contact. Without waiting for her to speak, Fay crowed, "Satanists!" Her eyes were full of suppressed laughter. "The Satanists are the shit throwers." The girl narrowed her eyes at Fay, folded her arms and set her lips in a disapproving frown. Fay was being mean and she felt bad for the girl as she waved her hand impatiently at the jam in Andie's hand. "Will that be all?"

The next morning, the fog hovering above the lake was pea soup thick, the air as biting as yesterday's light caress of a spring breeze, the weather mimicking Andie's state of mind. She kept trying to make sense of the past few days, either connect the strange events swirling around her or dismiss it all as unfortunate coincidence, but so far all she felt was more lost. Walpurgisnacht. She'd solved that mystery on her own, no thanks to January Orion Phoenix. Likewise, the significance of 430. April 30 was a celebration day of an obscure German saint named Walpurga. She'd had something to do with curing whooping cough and battling witchcraft. Some online sources said the saint's focus on witches initiated years of horrific purges during which hundreds of innocent people were slaughtered on rumor and innuendo. It was the first Satanic Panic, but make it Medieval with all the barbarity you could imagine. Andie was firmly on the side of the witches and when she pulled up the Sisters of Lazuli website found that they would coincidentally be celebrating Walpurgisnacht the following week by hosting a 24-hour cleansing ritual starting at 6:00 pm on April 30 and winding up at 6:00 pm on May 1 with a Maypole dance. The public was invited.

She takes in Sugar's leather pants. "You look different, Danny." Then she shrugs, pastes a fake smile on her face. "I don't go by Cal anymore," she says. I tell her nobody calls me Danny but her. She fiddles with those rings. "So why are you here? Tonight." I could tell her the truth, but instead I say it must be a coincidence, that I spotted her earlier but I wasn't sure it was her until now. Her upper lip curls. "It's mad that you're standing here in front of me," she says, giving me this shoulder hug and air kissing both my cheeks. She taps her phone awake and says she has to go. She's a little manic, searching in her handbag for something. "Who's the guy?" I say. "It's not your husband." She pauses with the mint she'd been searching for held between her fingers, then pops it into her mouth, coming close enough that I can smell the minty freshness of her breath. Her mouth is slightly open. Those vampire teeth peek out from behind her top lip. "I want to see you again, but I can't do this right now. Get an encrypted phone number and text it to me here." Cal scribbles a string of numbers on a card and presses it into my hand "Tomorrow."

Dressed only in a thigh-high terry robe, Vernon reclined on what was essentially a full-size, outdoor canopy bed. A bag of frozen peas perched on top of his head. He squinted up at me, then picked up his shades and racked them on his head to hold the bag of peas in place. "I've got a rager," he said. "Princess kept me up all fucking night." I made sympathetic noises and told him that Remy had called out. "Do you want me to fire her for you?" He dropped the sunglasses onto his nose, using a forefinger to push them into place. I said firing was unnecessary, but we should have a talk with her. "We need to deliver a scolding," Vernon said. "Got it. Sure. What did Princess say about the audition?" I told him she wanted me to make alterations on a dress because it was important, and he sighed. "We need to tamp down unrealistic expectations," he said. I asked him why we would do that, and he smiled disagreeably. "Well, Danvers," with no small amount of sarcasm, "some people just get off on humiliating others. But that's Hollywood, isn't it?"

I think we can also agree that the people around here aren't terribly sophisticated. To a lot of people, Wiccan practices are satanic." "That's a lot of assumption on your part," Andie said sharply. She couldn't help herself. January Orion Phoenix was acting like she was the ultimate authority. Well, if so, it was entirely self-appointed and she wasn't going to get away with it. January fixed her gaze on Andie. "All this—" she gestured at the room, "it's dangerous. And the Sisters certainly have nothing to do with Vander, Or his father." "What do you know about Vander Lassiter and his father?" Andie asked. More of a challenge than she'd intended and again, Samwise shook his head at her ever so slightly. Don't focus on the other girl. Focus on your own game.

"Danvers!" Alice called out. "Come, sit." I had sought out the tranquility of a pristine blue-sky day, without a whisper of wind, to think. I didn't want to believe I was out of my depth. Admitting that would be impossible. Besides, who would I tell? Vernon? He'd lose faith in me, maybe even fire me. But ever since Sugar had gotten the part in Westerfield's movie, every day felt like my first day on the job. Every day brought another pop quiz in a subject I hadn't known I should be studying for. My limits--those all-important boundaries--were unknowable. I regularly frightened myself.

Naturally Paul darling and his film were different. The script was raw. And real. And sexy. It pushed the boundaries and was guaranteed to create a shock to the system when it came out. I said it sounded like the kind of film her parents had made in their day. But I regretted bringing them up, because her face got sad and her eyes watered. She looked away, leaned her elbows on the railing. "Paul's nothing like Artie," she said in this dead voice. It wasn't clear if she was telling that to me or herself. Two teenage kids with skateboards had parked themselves against the wall opposite us. They stared rudely, so I assumed they had recognized her. In a loud voice Sugar asked them what (the fuck) they were looking at. The smaller, dark-haired kid with a backward cap said, "I know who you are," and she said, "Oh yeah?" and walked over to them, hands on her hips. "Who am I?" she said. I stepped forward, this involuntary reaction. Sugar was a magnet for trouble--a trespasser like me--and I was ready to defend her. But her fight fizzled when the dark-haired kid said, "Don't get your panties in a twist, grandma." Then the other one, with streaky blond hair like a young lan, called her a nepo-baby bitch. So she said, "Fuck you," and they laughed at her. It was a painful exit.
