And to be clear, the mayor's 2026 proposal is not just a "no police cuts" budget -- it's a budget in which CPD (already the city's most expensive dept. by far) received a larger year-over-year net increase of non-grant funds than any other dept.

Larger than most other departments' entire budgets!

More than trace amounts of uranium, for those of us with the original Fiestaware red sets.

Just an astonishing synchronicity on my skyline for this one.

Tried to do the “Worst Person You Know Just Made a Great Point” meme in Blackest Black, but I’m not sure it really READS, ya know?

My favorite thing about the Jael story is the broad artistic consensus that she must have been having a fantastic fucking time. Just look at those smiles.

Apropos of nothing, here's an 1873 cartoon of Uncle Sam, wielding a writ of "PUBLIC OPINION" and ordering a bunch of senators to commit harakiri because their conduct had so disgraced the nation.

Pair of Bell 429 helicopters circling Edgewater near Foster/Broadway right now, according to Flightradar24. The one with a registration number is ID'd as Cook County Sheriff's office, and the other is N/A.

It’s weird looking at old James Bond books and movie posters and realizing that the whole “Double O” and “License to Kill” stuff made for a thrilling action premise because the default assumption at the time was NOT that any law enforcement agent can of course kill you and face no consequences.

Most 2022-2024 CPD overspend came from legal settlements and from personnel services. The latter is a broad category that includes salaries, overtime, and other pay and bonuses (but not pensions and medical benefits, which are in a citywide Finance General section of the budget rather than CPD's).

With the caveat that the data here is non-grant local funds only (the bulk of most departments' budgets, but some are more heavily grant-funded), Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Commission on Human Relations also went over budget in 2024, although by substantially smaller amounts:

It's not a small impact. Depending on how you calculate CPD fringe (using a citywide average salary, as OBM does, vs. averages based on the departmental salaries and benefit agreements), excluding it impacts the floor calculation by anywhere from $4.3-8.6m annually for COPA, and $1.2-2.2m for CCPSA.

(Also, when I googled the specific date to double-check my citation: LOL. I dare say even, LMFAO. Just love that this slop is by default forced to the top above actual information.)

Perhaps not coincidentally, the first "Calvin and Hobbes" appearance of the "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" cereal was in 1986...

Was lucky enough to catch “Peking Opera Blues” at @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social this weekend and I cannot tell y’all how poly/queer this movie from 1986 is.

Just at this drag king and her girlfriends. (They also have boyfriends! Some of them share boyfriends!) It’s amazing.

Rooting for both the Cubs and the Sox is Fine, Actually.

(They play like three games against each other a year and for those yeah sure pick a side. Rest of the time? Enjoy living in a world-class city that offers two distinct and different major league ballparks with direct train access. 🤷🏼‍♂️)
