But it saves your insurance company a ton of time and resources! You do the work of finding the best price, and all they have to do is refuse to cover it.

Well … also you usually can’t comparison shop because you don’t know what you’re shopping for! If you go to the doctor because your back hurts, there are approximately one zillion things that could be. Are you supposed to price “look at back” and then separately price the actual treatment?
