We need to get past the MFL culture wars and look at the real problem.

The culture/communication versus grammar thing was nonsense. And in fact revealed the complexity and richness of our subject.

We need to tackle the system that undermines us:

And the river was lovely. If I was going to give one bit of advice to teachers, whatever their role, it would be to get out and walk. It gives you time to think, put things into perspective, and you are then able to organise your thoughts. You see clearer, if that makes sense.

Remember when they had us fighting each other in the MFL culture wars? Communication v Grammar, when of course it's both.

This is what they were trying to distract us from:

The elephant in the room with this otherwise nice report is grading.

If you sell petrol for £1.40 a litre but the place over the road and everywhere else sells it for £1.30, it's no good wondering why no-one picks languages.

The false assertions by those defending unfair grading in MFL are sexist and should be illegal.

Do NOT let anyone say that lower grades is because of difficulty getting good teachers. That calibration has NOT been made. It is a random accident.

If anyone says that grades in languages are lower because teaching is bad or it's hard to get good teachers, they are lying. No such calibration has taken place. It's just an anomaly we have got stuck with.

We don't need to inflict this kind of machismo on ourselves.
