For the 31.7% of households in Brum who don’t own a car so can’t use those sites, how do we recycle small electricals? Please don’t say the mobile waste, as they seem to be only during working hours. Can a City Centre facility/collection be provided?

Not surprised. Last month in Groningen I found they were rebuilding a road bridge, so they had put up a temporary bridge just for pedestrians & those on bikes.

I’m fed up with being bullied by motorists on the roads of Brum, whether I’m walking or on 2 wheels. I’ve been cycling on roads since the 1970s, but now, virtually every day, I feel like giving up and buying a tank sized tin can, just so that I can safely get from A to B.

Can’t prove cause & effect, but really noticed the difference on the roads this week…

Yeah, this morning’s 3 mile commute included being shouted at, being close passed & being driven at - so a normal commute in Brum.
Last month I did 160miles around Switzerland without any of these threatening situations.

Well this certainly doesn’t count as a mountain bike, spotted by Lake Zurich last month.

Worth remembering how bad it was before - found this from when we had to use the shared path along the Bristol Road. The path was very bumpy in places because of tree roots & the bike & trailer didn't have suspension. @a38cycleway.bsky.social @betterstreetsforbirmingham.org

Yeah, west of Arnhem even the Garmin Climbpro kicked into action on a few climbs. The route from Nijmegen to Utrecht was pretty lumpy generally.

Had similar @bromptonbicycle.bsky.social derailleur malfunction back in 2018. But trying to get hold of a bit of tape to botch a repair in Paris an hour after France had won the World Cup was a challenge.

I don’t think it helped moving the hospital way out of the city. It increases dependency on getting there by car. There had been one on the original site since 1771 close to the city centre (my brother was born there & one of my grandmas died there). It was accessible to more people than the new one

I was in a meeting once and all the Operations teams’ pagers (remember them) went off saying “trains delayed due to a peasant on the line”
They later corrected it to ‘pheasant’.

I think the line “…people who do not look like they expected to get on a bike when they got dressed that morning…” says a lot about the author’s overall view of utility cycling.

What about those that drive straight at you on the wrong side of the road. I don’t think even Dante had a place for them.

Totally agree. I came off on the ice 2 years ago and broke my shoulder. Eventually found a racing trike on eBay. Has been a godsend for commuting & shopping this winter. It comes with other issues on cambered roads & when cornering, but remains upright on icy roads.
