I really like this point about using your imagination. I’ve thought about this with how high fidelity media is now - the part of my brain that had to fill in the blanks on pixel art doesn’t activate when games are showing me 4K HD models now.

(incidentally a lot of that save stating was trying to learn the Reaper's scythe patterns. Then I watched a speedrun and learned holy water locks him in place and you never deal with the scythes. welp.)

I (and a lot of other people imo) have a tendency to separate the "stage" and the "boss fight" into two distinct entities - but especially in CV1, it's all one thing! The boss fight is informed by how well you managed health/hearts/subweapons prior, it doesn't mean as much without that context.

I finished CV1 for the first time yesterday and ended up save stating for the Reaper and Dracula, with the reasoning that I wanted to practice them. But then after winning, I didn't go back to replay the full stage from start to finish, and I think that was a mistake.

I have to imagine at least some of the inability for AI to improve is based on the fact that any large enough set of training data probably, at this point, contains a ton of AI slop itself.
