Hello world!

There will be science, law, and me being snarky about innovation policy. Possibly some screaming into the void.

I've occasionally thought I might make a half decent lay magistrate, up here in Scotland. I think the maximum sentence that can be imposed is 2 months.
oh Americans may not understand this, but a 'magistrate' in the UK is a local volunteer with typically no legal background. But it's ok, they receive about 10 days of training. And now they can send you to jail for two years without a jury!

To make my point. (L) M87 from the EHT (2019), (R) PRIMO reconstruction of the same observations. This work started when I crashed the weekly coffee and pastries of the UofA EHT group. If they told me to get lost, this would have never happened, but there would have been more goodies for everyone.

For context
- International fees across UK unis is £10.3 billlion

- About a fifth of total income of about £52 billion/year
(International fees 23% of total income in 2023/24 v 5% in 90s)

- A 6% levy on international fees about £620m: so a bit above 1% of total university income, but uneven impact

A ‘mansion tax’ on homes worth over £2m to raise about £400/450m a year is everything wrong with a ‘smorgasbord’ approach.
Lots of potential political pain for a public finances rounding error. Coupled with a new weird cliffedges.
Either reform property tax to raise proper money or don’t.

Fuck it, why don't we charge 20% on all tuition fees, domestic and foreign.
With Rachel Reeves reportedly set to apply a new tax on tuition fees paid by overseas students, most Britons support such a move at the previously mooted level of 6%

I'd like to see the response to this if the question added "if that that means universities have less money to spend on UK students".
