For example, for victims of the Holocaust, the 10th of Tevet was chosen as a general day to say Kaddish for those victims whose exact day of passing isn't known.

Yes (and it was pretty common after the Holocaust for example). For certain customs/observances (like Shiva) we use the day that you found out about the death and for the Yahrtzeit you either choose one of the likely days (if you have a range, like your case) or just choose a meaningful date.

It only take a few minutes to check, while most of the time it's only a few dollars (which, hey, why not? It's free money and why should the state keep it?) I found a few hundred once and people have found thousands as well.

Yeah, at some point you have to just embrace the fact that the job searching process contains at least some element of randomness to it. It can be disconcerting at times (you did everything right and still didn't get the job), but also, in a way, comforting (you know it's not a problem with you)
