the very first post i made, my very first bit of criticism, imo pretty clearly enunciates that specification compliance was not the point being criticized!

it's hard to see it as anything other than bullying when they so extensively strawman you, refusing to engage with the criticism in any way.
i could make a DRM scheme that calls its license server (appview) through XRPC, storing the encrypted content uploaded as blobs referenced within records all on any arbitrary user's PDS, all following the atproto specifications, and I hope we would all agree that that's not atproto ethos

look i don't agree with all of his choices either

This is one of my favorite arguments because I’d like to introduce you to my dad:

53, not really technical. Great at his job... as a religious master.

Learning to be a developer? He already thinks he's one.

Why?

Because he can vibecode with Cursor and get ChatGPT to teach him Python

this is pretty much the point i am making in the thread yea

you can use the rest of the tools (the identity part, notably), you don't need to use records / sync protocol, and you'll still be pretty much atproto

nah computer science officially recognizes two genders and they are good girl and evil (he/him)

i keep laughing to myself at "came in fluxer" my own fucking text is living rent free in my mind

"not everything needs to be on protocol" is just. well yeah, but anything *could be*, if you actually cared and understood the protocol.

so i have to assume that people who are fine with not doing authenticated transfer either do not care, or do not understand the protocol.

there are many different models an app might be operating under. e.g. labelers are expected to bear the bandwidth cost of all appviews (because you can't have a provably-non-censoring label relay).

you can invent your own new kinds of instances that communicate on the protocol as your app requires.
February 13, 2026 at 2:13 PM
the MST-based sync protocol (which is also named atproto; it's unfortunate that so many parts are called the same as the whole) ensures resistance against relay-level censorship, it's necessary for the relay optimization to exist and so for scalability while allowing resource-constrained PDSes.
February 13, 2026 at 2:01 PM
atproto has credible exit because of *mutable DIDs as the root of trust*. records do this, the PDS manages it, etc. records are the typical way to do idiomatic atproto.

labelers also do this through the signatures on subscribeLabels! i.e. there are avenues for other forms of data to be on protocol!
February 13, 2026 at 1:56 PM
i feel like people don't understand it means basically nothing to be on protocol, spec compliant, etc. anything can be on protocol if you use XRPC and atproto auth.

the question is never whether something "does atproto", it's whether it's *idiomatic* atproto. that doesn't necessarily mean records!
