the lyric is a reference to the original line from shakespeare’s romeo and juliet, “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” which taylor subverts the line to show that a sapphic relationship is seen as a “scandal” while a heterosexual relationship is not.

philips’s poem, “friendship’s mystery, to my dear lucasia,” reminds me of invisible string, especially with the stanza, “for though we were design’d t’ agree, fate no liberty destroyes, but our election is as free as angels, who with greedy choice, are yet determin’d to their joyes.”

and to be completely honest, college has been very stressful, and my part time job kind of sucks. i just want to move out and find an apartment where i have three cats and just write novels all day. but i need a decent job first to get to that point, if it ever happens.
