With all of this discourse around Taylor I want to remind everyone that she said she is not the art police. And her work is meant to be a mirror. I think there's huge nuance here to be had with the ongoing debates around the interpretation of onyx and opalite. This discourse is a MIRROR.

greta thunberg's interview about being held captive & tortured by israel is viscerally upsetting. the depravity can't be overstated. & they're doing worse to palestinians. heavy read but a reminder that as i live my life, palestinians are dying. take nothing for granted. donate. free palestine.

i love this photo of taylor and benji 🥺

i definitely agree with you about “protect the family” and that it’s relating in terms of business and not a heteronormative family type.

the only problem with trying to ignore these bad takes is that if they don’t get called out, the harm will continue to spread if that makes sense.

actually romantic x the albatross

i’m so sorry for the long thread. i have a lot of thoughts and feelings right now
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
i understand that she is doing performance art and acting like the showgirl persona, but there is a certain point where she cannot always hide behind the facade and not say anything. sometimes you have to say something even if you’re too soft for all of it.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
even if the album is satirical, and it is critiquing the showgirl version of her and how the music industry is exploiting artists, it does not mean that she cannot speak up and clarify something that can potentially harm her career in the future.

i have been a fan of taylor since the lover era, and i believe she is a kind and generous person, but she needs to do better when it comes to her activism.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
people will perceive her as not caring about the issue, and it will continue to happen unless she speaks up about it.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
even if the album is satirical and she is playing a character (which i believe it is and she has mentioned it in interviews), i think she needs to be more clear and direct because if something is not being addressed, especially if it is harmful and potentially dangerous,
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
anyway i’m just tired of what has been going on since taylor’s new album has come out, and some people need to have their priorities straight when it comes to activism and critical analysis. but i still need taylor to address some of the genuine concerns even if she had no malice intent.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
i’m upset and tired of seeing people doing performative activism and acting like they are morally superior because they don’t like a certain celebrity. i guarantee that those kind of people have never organized or been to a protest.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
what saddens me even more is that there are much bigger problems right now, and i feel like all of this is a distraction. from the genocide going on in palestine to the deportations that are separating families and neighbors to our rights being taken away because of a fascist government.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
taylor or her team need to at least address these things because while certain people are acting in bad faith or just using their own personal biases to justify hating her, the actual criticisms and concerns about taylor and the album are being overshadowed.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
i know taylor has endorsed democratic candidates, has a tons of poc and lgbtq friends, and has advocated for women and lgbtq rights, but she is still a privileged white billionaire who has blind spots in certain issues.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
the point that i’m trying to make is taylor needs to address certain issues about her album and her merch, especially with the current political climate we are living in right now. it’s also doesn’t help that she is still associating herself with the mahomes even if it part of her nfl contract.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
i haven’t even touched on the lack of media literacy these days and people not having critical thinking skills which are important, especially when it comes to consuming art.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
there is also the issue with social media algorithms and bots which can be used for smear campaigns and spreading misinformation and propaganda.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
and i think that the problem is that people do not want to have actual conversations and instead are either virtual signaling, ragebaiting, or just hating on taylor based on their confirmation bias.
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
it’s frustrating because i have heard genuine criticisms from black women (using aave in eldest daughter, and the micro aggression, tradwife propaganda-like lyrics in songs like wi$h li$t, “have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you”)
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
i know she briefly mentioned in one of her interviews that she is not the art police, but i’m talking about people who are just straight up saying that she is a maga tradwife n*zi sympathizer (which it is fucking insane to say about her and i don’t think she is at all.)
folkswiftpoet.bsky.social
as much as i love taylor swift and her music, she needs to address the criticism that she has been getting since the album’s release rather if it was intentional or not.
