A mysterious old man. A sudden and inexplicable act. And from there, a small town becomes the epicenter of violence and bloodshed driven by poisonous bigotry and hate. @ericlarocca.bsky.social weaves themes of loss and trauma against the search for an ever-absent god.

OPUS is a thinker film on the subject of post-Jonestown cults. Ayo Edebiri is unafraid and compelling, and Malkovich is superb in his creepy charisma and treachery. (Think: the fantasies of Elon Musk as articulated by Right Said Fred.)

The year is approaching its 66.6% mark, and I’ll say that WEAPONS is the most engaging new flick I’ve seen. Director Zach Cregger ups the ante on themes from BARBARIAN (2022) with a narrative whose lines cross (literally?) from slow-burn batshit to full-on paroxysmal batshit. Tons of fun!

As a person who had religion stuffed into his young head—eventually rejecting it at age 13—I’ll say that HERETIC was a refreshing deconstruction. Grant’s performance=metal.
The film’s greatest stunt, though, was that it was fair to believers too. I mean, somebody had to take the booby prize home.

Good, splatty fun, with a skein of imaginative kills—like the entire Final Destination franchise went full demonic overdrive. And all with that boutique King verve.

I don’t know if this country has the smarts or the guts to be any better, but I’ll say one goddamn thing: I’m gonna have my kicks and fly my freak flag high. So should you.

Work, play, love, read, see movies…and be there for yours.

Stand up. To hell with the bullies. DISOBEY.
