When you know what you’re looking at, ground operations at a major international airport are an exquisitely choreographed ballet. Happy Labor Day and mad props to all my ATC friends who keep all that metal moving safely day after day!

As we deserve, frankly. America went into this one in full possession of the facts, said “haha, YOLO, he won’t hurt ME,” and shot ourselves in the dick anyway.

Not as lean, not as mean (although maybe meaner?), but still pretty well-versed in psyops and maximizing asymmetric capabilities.

I think my dog might be running a protection racket. Backyard fauna status:

Lizards: fat, unbothered. Cut a deal?
Field mice: low life expectancy, occasionally brought to human servants as tip since she doesn’t pay for the maintenance of her lifestyle.
Rabbits: negotiations underway?

The Household Sovereign surveys her domain. Since she pays her staff only in snuggles and slobber, we must regularly depart the realm to earn ducats elsewhere. This displeases her. Staff periodically considers a union drive, but then Sovereign does something adorable and we don’t.

Tonight is the 56th anniversary of the moon landing. Americans are capable of extraordinary daring and achievement. We’re capable of anything.

But also…we’re capable of anything.

‘Heroes’ is my favorite David Bowie song because I’ve been there and seen with my own eyes that everyone has it in them to be a hero, even just for one day. We all like to think that, don’t we? That we’d stand up and do the right thing when history and humanity and the moment called for it. 9/x

…so long that they’re not prepared for what they’d do’ that really keeps me up at night.

I don’t enjoy the movie Chinatown. It’s bleak. It’s also depressingly accurate about human nature. The last line is most famous, but it’s what Noah Cross says to Jake Gittes that I think about all the time: 7/x

…this photo broke my heart. In my experience, people approach someone who looks that happy after an immigration hearing to offer them a little American flag and a heartfelt “Welcome home!” This time, some masked rando takes her away. WTF? (📸 @madisonswart.bsky.social) 2/x

Yesterday my family and friends and I, along with millions of our fellow Americans, celebrated our Independence Day as John Adams prescribed, with “bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other.” Today the fight for a more perfect union continues. See you out on the line.

My friends who did not survive our service. This list was outdated within a month of being framed in July 2022. Here’s a toast…

Tomorrow I grill burgers & hot dogs for fam/friends. We’ll have beans & potato salad & corn & ice cream sundaes & Jell-O shots, as one does for 4th of July. But today I had German beer and kimchi tacos for lunch, because for 249 years, amazing people have come here. What a country. 🍺 🌮 🍔 🌭 🇰🇷 🇩🇪 🇲🇽 🇺🇸

Cut this one out of the newspaper 20+ years ago & it’s been framed on my desk ever since. I can instantly tell how well I’ll get along with someone based on whether they recognize it when I say “some days even my lucky rocketship underpants don’t help.”

Annoying my phone nuked my entire contact list, but rebuilding what I could by reading old text convos for context more productive than housing a 6-pack of DIPA while staring into the middle distance like I may otherwise have over the news. Anyway, here’s a pretty pic of my fave spot on Earth. ✌🏻
