also my natural response to aislop poisoning industries is to go "if it doesn't matter how it's made then why not go fuck it and make it the fun weird way, since they'll undervalue the work either way"

in general i wish more films took visual cues from illustrated narratives when it comes to framing and pacing, i just think everyone needs to get weirder with it and break out of current era conventions of what a movie looks and moves like. new new wave

special shout out to terry denton for capturing the feeling of doodling while also doing some great 4th wall breaking play with the medium that encourages going back and forth and seeking out details while still being cartoony
December 22, 2025 at 12:48 PM
and theres also so much charming dynamic playful stuff going on in the way it handles humour and pacing and stylisation
December 22, 2025 at 12:48 PM
just sticking to classic kids books theres such a variety of simple yet imaginative art, with wonderful texture to it
December 22, 2025 at 12:48 PM
not all for children but some of these books i read and reread as a child don't have ANY words and all of them have GORGEOUS art
December 22, 2025 at 12:24 PM
also theres plenty of mixing of more general illustrated books that i picked up because i liked the art and there were also books for kids that had more mature theme, the format is great for more than just the charming learn to read type of books
December 22, 2025 at 12:21 PM
and maybe some of that was just my brain liking routine and enjoying the texture of the visuals, but i've kept some and repurchased others of picture books from my childhood so i can say with confidence that they are still impressive artistic works. simple themes doesn't mean shallow form.

i didn't like the pressure of starting a chapter book i would have to borrow to finish for the 15 minutes silent reading as a child, so i used to walk around the library and browse the picture books instead, which is funny cause i was also ahead of the reading level for my age most of my schooling.

🫩 ueah..... it's mindboggling
December 22, 2025 at 6:31 AM
perhaps! but at the scale or production i'm thinking of (big budget/blockbusters) it's not even a time saver or even necessarily cheaper depending on the effect needed- so!
