i guess i'm just that much closer to writing an introduction to the elements and principles of design for readers of self-published comics, zines and art books.

perhaps especially when one is unfamiliar with the artist or their context. maybe you don't know where someone is coming from, but if the harsh lines here and that slash of white through a field of black on a page gives you a feeling of drama, you've got something to talk about!

anyway i think the basics of formal analysis—just trying to identify the elements that constitute a work and how they combine to produce one's experience of a work—are an excellent set of skills to have when engaging with an artist's work at indie comics cons/zine fests.

a reply i hear often enough for it to be noticeable is "i'm glad you noticed! i make and share these things and i hope they're conveying what i want but i don't really know for the most part." and that kinda sucks!

i think exhibitors at indie comics/zine events often get reactions like "that's cool, i really like it!", but explanations for what it is in a work that produces that reaction tends to be absent, vague or very rudimentary.

when i tell an artist "i like how [element] does [effect]" in a work...

chihuly's works are distinct in having one or more bright colors, shapes, being big and made of glass—they are generically generic. they are ideal objects for institutional collection.
