I'm an evolutionary ecologist and teacher. A former student sent a Christmas card, now a nursery owner, saying he thinks about what I taught him every day. It brought the feels. Seeing people you care about thrive, and knowing you mattered, restores faith in humanity.

I feel awful because I'm a scientist and am optimist, but since society has become anti-science or anti-reality, my posts have become dark. I could be wrong, but societies don’t collapse when bad things happen. They collapse when bad things happen and nothing corrects them.

I am an evolutionary ecologist and i can tell you evolution isn’t a ladder, it’s a drunk walk while retaining the memory. Somehow, Mother Nature keeps finding snacks...I don't know, it makes me happy to know that Mother Nature is a snacker.

I find it interesting when people call tax legislation permanent because tax laws aren’t truly permanent; any future Congress can change or repeal them. Trump’s tax cuts increase debt while they remain in effect, but their long-term impact isn’t fixed. 'Forever' is hyperbole.

Thirty years on, colleges have shifted from trusting educators to fear-driven control by administrators, treating students as “customers.” I don’t know how many master electricians would call their apprentice a customer, yet that’s how higher ed now frames the craft of teaching.

How is this logical? Trump’s billion-dollar demand of UCLA only hurts students, the very people our government is meant to support. Even conservatives must see that tearing apart the education system undermines what once made this country great.

Ever since Rump got elected, my blood sugar went from “in control” to straight-up diabetically out of control. I eat low carb and stay active, so yeah, it turns out authoritarianism is a health risk. Anyone else’s glucose monitor screaming “FML”? Or "FMT"? W/is "F* my timeline"

I am mystified. If we’re truly a nation of laws, we can’t pick and choose which ones to follow. Ignoring bargained rights for federal workers isn’t reform. It’s lawlessness. Left or right, if power overrides process, we all lose the protection that law is meant to give.

I am getting very alarmed at how ice aggregate are detaining period for obstruction when asking for them to identify themselves. This is abuse of power, and our legislators aren't doing anything about it. So know your rights. I am not a lawyer, but this is what I know:

When justice fails, rage fills the vacuum. But rage doesn’t have to burn. It can march. Peaceful protest turns fury into focus. Turning outrage into action and alliance. A crowd yelling is a moment. A crowd planning? That’s a movement. Five million people is fucking awesome history.

For the curious: I'm an ecologist, not a mathematician, though I use stats daily. “Fitmathematician” came from my students joking about my use of goodness-of-fit tests…and my need to hit the gym. Not wrong on either count. They called it “cute grandfather chubby.” I got a handle, and they got As.
