So all of us who are able should sign up for poll watching if we are concerned about the legitimacy of the election.

Poll Watchers | U.S. Election Assistance Commission
Poll watchers, sometimes referred to as "election observers," are individuals who may observe steps in the election process. Each state has its own laws and procedures on when and where observers can ...

Conservatism emphasizes limits on power. Its core principle is that government authority should be constrained by law, oversight, and transparency to prevent abuse, protect individual liberty, and ensure the state is accountable to the people it governs. Where are the conservatives in congress?

I'm an evolutionary ecologist and teacher. A former student sent a Christmas card, now a nursery owner, saying he thinks about what I taught him every day. It brought the feels. Seeing people you care about thrive, and knowing you mattered, restores faith in humanity.

I feel awful because I'm a scientist and am optimist, but since society has become anti-science or anti-reality, my posts have become dark. I could be wrong, but societies don’t collapse when bad things happen. They collapse when bad things happen and nothing corrects them.

I am an evolutionary ecologist and i can tell you evolution isn’t a ladder, it’s a drunk walk while retaining the memory. Somehow, Mother Nature keeps finding snacks...I don't know, it makes me happy to know that Mother Nature is a snacker.

1/2 Attacking Kelly isn’t about law or policy; it’s about undermining credibility. When an administration targets a highly trusted, reality-anchored figure, an astronaut, it signals insecurity and institutional decay. Power attacking trust is not strength; it’s a warning sign.

I find it interesting when people call tax legislation permanent because tax laws aren’t truly permanent; any future Congress can change or repeal them. Trump’s tax cuts increase debt while they remain in effect, but their long-term impact isn’t fixed. 'Forever' is hyperbole.

True education isn’t a transaction. It’s a craft. Like a master guiding an apprentice, it’s about passing on wisdom, skill, and curiosity. When we treat students as learners instead of customers, we honor the real purpose of higher education.

Thirty years on, colleges have shifted from trusting educators to fear-driven control by administrators, treating students as “customers.” I don’t know how many master electricians would call their apprentice a customer, yet that’s how higher ed now frames the craft of teaching.

Florida mandates rabies shots for pets so kids don’t die. But when it’s humans, vaccines suddenly “don’t work” against deadly diseases, but only within the confines of Florida? WTF mate?

How is this logical? Trump’s billion-dollar demand of UCLA only hurts students, the very people our government is meant to support. Even conservatives must see that tearing apart the education system undermines what once made this country great.

Ever since Rump got elected, my blood sugar went from “in control” to straight-up diabetically out of control. I eat low carb and stay active, so yeah, it turns out authoritarianism is a health risk. Anyone else’s glucose monitor screaming “FML”? Or "FMT"? W/is "F* my timeline"

1/3 I am now a scientist, but I started my educational pursuits with a BA in philosophy, where I learned about the failings of scientists and their dogma. Many forget that libertarianism isn't just political; it's rooted in Kant’s view that liberty arises from being, not from governments.

I'm digging Smartless. No, I'm not a paid shill, but it is nice to hear famous people tell us about their lives or just chat in a non-TikTok, show me the money, influencer bullshit drama.

So, my wife and I are watching Friends, where chandler pretends to go to Yemen. I swore up and down that at the end of one of the DVD releases that they actually show him in Yemen wearing a Russian style getup with the fur hat and all. I remember him saying, "I'm in yemen." Thoughts?

The people are stirring, like the harbor before the first crate hit the water. Trump, the Court, and the Leviathan road crew take heed. This isn’t your Tea Party. It’s the real one: progressive, awake, and fed up. In a democracy, we are the law. Fear not rage. Fear resolve.

Post 1/8:
I am mystified. If we’re truly a nation of laws, we can’t pick and choose which ones to follow. Ignoring bargained rights for federal workers isn’t reform. It’s lawlessness. Left or right, if power overrides process, we all lose the protection that law is meant to give.

So supreme court says that states can defund planned parenthood because taxes abortions blah blah blah, but if we use our taxes to create bombs for eternal wars that kill children we just have to suck it.

I am getting very alarmed at how ice aggregate are detaining period for obstruction when asking for them to identify themselves. This is abuse of power, and our legislators aren't doing anything about it. So know your rights. I am not a lawyer, but this is what I know:

When justice fails, rage fills the vacuum. But rage doesn’t have to burn. It can march. Peaceful protest turns fury into focus. Turning outrage into action and alliance. A crowd yelling is a moment. A crowd planning? That’s a movement. Five million people is fucking awesome history.

When @bradtakei.bsky.social and I first got together, we never imagined we’d one day celebrate Pride openly, let alone post about it on the internet. But here we are, joy and all. Happy Pride, everyone! Let’s keep showing up, speaking out, and marching forward (glitter optional, but encouraged). 🌈✨

For the curious: I'm an ecologist, not a mathematician, though I use stats daily. “Fitmathematician” came from my students joking about my use of goodness-of-fit tests…and my need to hit the gym. Not wrong on either count. They called it “cute grandfather chubby.” I got a handle, and they got As.
