It's time for match control. Purchase permit, 15 day waiting period. Certification and licensing for lighters, assuming you can pass FBI/ATF background checks. Must store in a secure container or be held liable if stolen and used in a crime. Ban blowtorches, no one needs a tool of mass destruction.

A lot of those food dates are, strictly speaking, "best before" dates to force obsolescence, they can be rather arbitrary. It's not as if, two years after purchase, the food is OK on June 12 and spoiled June 13.

Not saying keep it all, but dates alone are not disqualifiers. Years are sometimes OK.

As a former driver of the bone box, can confirm.

Someone who wants to do a bad thing is going to do a bad thing with whatever is available to them to do it. If you take one thing away, they will use something else. Bad people do not throw up their hands and say 'aw shucks the weapon I wanted is banned here so I guess I'll go home'.

You'll note the source on the graph data is the Pew Research Center. Are you questioning that organization's credibility?

I'm at work. Probably 85% of my coworkers carry something like at all times, as ubiquitous as their wallets. Obviously they're all planning murders today. Thanks for the warning.

Oh whoops, me too.

So this just happened. My oldest daughter lives in downtown Seattle with my 9 year old grandson. They both ride the bus regularly. Seattle crime is crazy.

Bad people will do bad things, whether they have a gun or not.

I'm glad she carries, just in case.

Different regs, yes, but also topography (UK and AUS are islands, for example). And law enforcement, prosecutions. US is terribly soft on crime and mental holds. People in cities are often left to fend for themselves.

Case in point, Daniel Penny.

I choose to not be defenseless in my reality. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know if that is really a fair apples to apples comparison, but my reasoning works something like that.

Fire departments are very low utilization per household, but high criticality, and very high penalty for not having when needed. That's similar to my frame of reference on the topic.

People are killed in fire response accidents all the time, but we would never abolish the fire service over it.

The chat has made me consider things that are perceived as essential or not depending on situation and perspective.
