Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII, I wanted to write about the writers and directors who were working during the war and the incredible films they managed to produce - with particular focus on John Ford, William Wyler and Alfred Hitchcock.
MJ's @fionaunderhill.bsky.social says, "Modern day Hollywood can certainly learn a thing or two from the filmmakers who worked during World War II, they didn’t shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths..."

Check out the latest feature from Fiona on WWII films, 80 years later.
“Our job is to lay down that sacrifice:” Contemporary films of World War II, 80 years later — Moviejawn
by Fiona Underhill, Staff Writer In the 80 years since the end of the Second World War, hundreds of Hollywood movies have attempted to convey the experience of being in the thick of the fighting, or ...

Finally. My big 2800 word essay about One Battle After Another and its black women characters is live. www.vulture.com/article/blac...
Black Actresses Are Carrying One Battle After Another
Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall propel the film’s most conflicted ideas, for better and worse.

It's only just occurred to me that Buckley and Mescal will be doing my accent in Hamnet (I'm from Warwickshire, where Shakes is from)

This should be interesting *rubs hands together*

If Nuremberg is being described as "powerful" anywhere, it's entirely because of the stolen valour of including a large section of George Stevens' short documentary film Nazi Concentration Camps.

Just watch that instead!

A ★★ review of Nuremberg (2025)
Well there was no way I was NOT watching a film about Nuremberg, even though I suspected it would be bad. By far the most powerful and effective segment is George Stevens' short documentary film Nazi ...

I am determined to watch three of the four JOSH O'CONNOR FALL 🐭🍂🍁🍄 films this week.

(Gotta wait until The Mastermind lands on Mubi in December, which I suspect will be saving the best til last)

I love Panettone season 😋
It’s that time of the year again…good alone, with an espresso and makes the perfect French toast…just saying 😊❤️

Adding this to the small selection of films from this year which are arty, weird, and very much for me

After 16 solid weeks of school, my kids finally get a week-long break from today 😅

This has been hard to get used to after the UK, where the kids get a break every 6-8 weeks.

So I watched After the Hunt and I think it's unfortunate that it came out in the same year as the far superior Sorry Baby (similar subject matter and setting)

I do think Garfield was well cast as a convincing, manspreading sex pest. Indian restaurant scene prob the most memorable of the entire film

Today's double bill has restored my faith in movies somewhat after what has mostly been a boring, lacklustre year so far (for me, at least).

Colour! Originality! Fun! Who knew!

Dash & Lily ✅

In a rare burst of productivity (let’s not get caught up in the details), I binged Dash & Lily overnight. Definitely not my usual cup of tea, but once it found its stride, I really cared for these cuties. Cheesy as hell, but it’s Christmas, so let’s rock 🎄📕 🥰
I recently rewatched DASH & LILY - an absolutely delightful Christmas rom com mini-series on Netflix

Austin Abrams is so so good in this and I hope after Weapons this year, he blows up a bit more because he deserves!

I wrote about my Noir Queen Audrey Totter and how much I love her in Lady in the Lake (yes really) as well as The Set-Up - two completely different performances which truly demonstrate her range.

Happy birthday to J. G. Ballard, a writer whose fiction could inspire great and equally quintessential films by both Stephen Spielberg and David Cronenberg, and the man behind some of the uniquely unsettling reading experiences I've ever had.
