An ancient bowl with human feet!

Made in predynastic Egypt around 5,500 years ago.

My photo shows a hemispherical red pottery bowl with underside supports in the shape of a pair of human feet. It is handmade from red Nile clay, slipped and polished to give a light surface sheen. The front of the bowl tips slightly forward as if offering its contents. The museum catalogue entry informs us that a bowl standing on feet is very similar in form to the Egyptian hieroglyph meaning "to bring." Dimensions: diameter 13.2 cm x width 13.7 cm x depth 9.8 cm. This type of bowl is dated to Predynastic Egypt, Late Naqada I-early Nagada lI period, circa 3700-3450 BC. I saw this bowl on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The museum purchased the bowl from M. Mohassib in Egypt in 1910.

Ice Age art!

A lovely little horse figurine sculpted from mammoth tusk around 15,000 years ago!

Known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’ it was found in 1886 in the cave of Les Espélugues, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. 📷 by me.

My photo shows a small horse statuette in a museum display case. The horse, viewed in profile, was masterfully carved from mammoth ivory around 15,000 years ago. The sculptor has depicted many realistic details such as the eyes, nostrils, and ears flattened against the head. The coat is represented by finely incised lines and dots. The mane is sculpted in relief, with incised lines on both sides. The four legs and tail are incomplete. The surface of the ivory has a shiny brown patina. Dimensions: Length 7.3 cm x Height 3.5 cm. The statuette is known as ‘The Little Horse of Lourdes’. It was discovered in 1886 in a rock fissure in the Espélugues cave, Lourdes, Haute-Pyrénées, France. Part of the collections at the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

KNIGHT - 2026

First Image of the year! had a lovely time getting into this once I managed to figure out the colours. will be adapting it into riso prints because I yearn to do some fairs.

My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and a slightly flaring rim. Each cup is decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif as follows: Top left: on a black background, a central band delineated by an upper and lower white line contains evenly-spaced dark-orange circles, each orange circle is outlined by a white line. Above and below the central band are swirling white vine-like lines. Top right: on a black background, a large white spiral on the front of the cup and beside it a dark-orange oval with stylised white petals at each end which looks like a wrapped sweet! Middle left: a central band of white and dark orange diagonal lines runs around the cup. Above and below the central band are alternating black and white diagonal shapes, the black ones look like shark fins Bottom left: a central reddish-orange band delineated with a white line. Above the central band are swirling, spiralling white lines against a black background, and below the central band are alternating white and black diagonal lines. Bottom right: all set against a black background. A central band delineated with white lines contains white ‘s’-shaped diagonal white stripes. Above the central band a row of red dots outlined with white circles. Below the central band a single white line on the black background. This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, named after the Kamares Cave on Mount Ida on the Greek island of Crete where this kind of pottery was first discovered. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops at Phaistos and Knossos on Crete. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.

The Dorestad Brooch, c. AD 800.

This beautiful Carolingian brooch was found at the bottom of a well in the Netherlands in 1969!

A large Carolingian gilded disc brooch intricately decorated with cloisonné inlay; that is tiny gold cells inlaid with semi-precious red almandine stones, white pearls, and red, white, green, and blue glass and enamel. The inlay is arranged to form a cross. At the centre of the brooch is a large oval red almandine in a gold fitting. Around the rim are four smaller almandines (one missing), four relatively large pearls, and sixteen smaller pearls. The brooch measures 8.5 centimetres in diameter. Large brooches like this were used to fasten a cloak, so this one was both functional and decorative. Analysis shows that the brooch was modified in antiquity. The remains of the attachment pin on the reverse was hammered flat to take small nails to attach the brooch to another object, perhaps a book or casket
