bsky post box but it's 504 characters over the limit: "what's best movie ending of the decade" post floating around with the final scene from Babylon ughhhhhh. i saw that fucking movie in a theater (friend took me along, i knew nothing of it beforehand) and it was probably one of the worst movie experiences i've had. i thought the guy at the end was crying because he saw how vapid and marked with suffering all the events of the film up to that point had been, how it was pointless to sacrifice yourself to the disgusting machinery of the mass entertainment industry, that no movie could make up for the suffering of beings, no movie in all of cinema history, and my friend was like, no, he's crying because it's worth it for The MoviesTM, Babylon absolutely believes its own mythology, it was directed by the La La Land guy, and then i was just so furious

[opening of Natsume Sōseki's "I am a Cat"] I am a cat. As of yet, I am without a name. Where I was born, I haven’t the slightest guess. I only remember crying out, nyaa nyaa, in some dim, gloomy space. There I saw for the first time one of those the creatures called “humans.” Not only that but, afterwards, I heard that he was of that most cruel variety of humans, those called “boarding students.” The story goes that these “boarding students” from time to time catch us, roast us, and eat us. But, at that time, as I was without any thought, I didn’t think them particularly fearsome. Instead, as I was suddenly lifted up to be placed on the palm of his hand, I felt only a kind of softness. It was there, on his palm, slightly calmed, looking into the student’s face, that I had perhaps my first glimpse of humanity. The feeling I had then, that they were strange creatures, remains even now. Firstly, his face, which should have been mantled in fur, was as smooth as a kettle—since then, I’ve met many cats, but I have not once come across such a deformity in them. Not only that, but the very center of his face protruded quite a bit, and he occasionally blew puffs of smoke out of the holes in it. I was worried I might be suffocated. It’s been only recently that I finally came to know this as the “tobacco” that humans often smoke.

Meanwhile, the most expensive of these projects, at $148 million, is Jeanne Gang’s Campus North dorm. It’s built in what we in the biz disparagingly call the “Dutch style,” after the penchant for irregular forms and seemingly pixelated façades pioneered by Dutch architects in the early 2000s. In addition to being an eyesore, the dorm is sited in such a way that the passageway beneath the two parts of the building creates a notorious wind tunnel. It only adds insult to architectural injury that the university constructed such luxury dorms after selling existing ones to—you guessed it—pay off some of its debt.

I imagine it as Buddhist, but am not sure. ‘In’: translating the 半 ‘middle’ of 夜半 yowa ‘middle of the night’. ‘[My] seldcome nights’: those rare nights when Shunzei visits the gravesite. ‘Seldcome’ is adapted from an Old English word appearing in the poem ‘Wulf and Eadwacer’—seldcyme—in which a woman laments infrequent visitations among other things. まれに mare ni nari-adj.
