You have to use a lot of imagination here. This is near Stanilesti in Moldavia on the Prut River where Peter the Great was outmanoeuvred by the Ottoman Grand Vizier Baltacı Mehmet Pasha. Sadly, unlike Vaslui, no monument, not even a paved road. The Ottomans won!

I’m at the Battle of Măcin, Russo-Ottoman War (1787–1792), fought on 9 July 1791. Russian army of 30,000 led by Prince Nicholas Repnin, against 80,000 Ottomans, led by Koca Yusuf Pasha. Kutuzov made his name here with a flanking move around the town. Filmed from the old fort.

I've been in touch with a US colleague who is an international superstar running an extremely successful research programme in health sciences.
They said things feel terrible out there, with several of their colleagues having left and more planning to - many leaving the US.
