Here’s an acrylic painting I did on location in Western Pennsylvania near Ligonier. I had about 45 minutes to paint it before returning it to the museum for art exhibition the next day.

This acrylic painting was made on location at the end of summer. The foreground is green grass with tufts of yellowish grass and other places of a dark green. I would call this color sap green in painting. In the middle third are a couple trees with some green leaves on them starting to turn to autumn leaves with oranges and rust colors. Beyond the trees in the background are hillsides, another ridge. This area is known as the Laurel Highlands and it’s a mecca for hiking, cross-country & downhill skiing, fishing, and just being at peace in nature. The sky is clouded over with gray, yet, the changing colors from summer greens to autumn yellows and oranges bring life to an otherwise dull sky of clouds.

More evolves as the painting progresses. Subtle details of the plant mater emerges from the illusion of water on top. The stones beneath become apparent. Water Lilly Pads seem to float or are partially submerged. Reflections of the plants can be seen on the water surface. The Burnt Umber underpainting is taking control and creating a warm feeling to the painting, a sense of being outside in the warm Sun.

Looking back at one of my first needle felted pieces, made on linen. I don't use this technique much these days, but I'm glad I documented the experimentation. Every piece teaches you something about your craft.
