Six years later, I have the pleasure of supervising a genius team. Together, we are tackling the decline of rail freight in Switzerland, taking on the central challenge of yet again restructuring single wagonload. It is a difficult yet somehow hopeful endeavor, probably the final attempt

4/4 I got rejected many times, as intern, from the trainee program. Finally, after I think 5 previous attempts, in 2019 the business development team of the passenger transportation division hired me as an intern to assist them in various projects about staff equipment - I couldn't have been luckier

3/x in my last business administration term, I got truly interested in railways in particular, having had nothing to do with rail transportation since my childhood. I absolutely wanted to learn and understand how it works, how people work (especially the staff), so I applied to SBB and a few others.

2/x Martin Kolmar's classes, together with a second one, "Modern Theories of Justice", were transformative - about what I should do and contribute in life. Somehow mobility and transportation became one of the key things where I got hooked on wanting to contribute, learn, and improve.

Lettered exits are no brainers indeed. I felt like the first human when I visited Seoul 10 years ago. My mind blown away by how easy orientation is in complex stations if there are clear designations for exits AND maps to understand where they are geographically.

Of course, automatization, and the application of sophisticated multi-stage classification strategies, as for example, triangular sorting, also contributed to marshalling yards with fewer humps, but the effort needed to serve almost every train station with freight is incomparable to today's.

People don't know how much sorting capacity a marshalling yard and a railway network needed before capillary transportation had been taken over by lorries and trucks.

It's unbelievable. It's 2025, and we still have studies stating that if people are diagnosed with cancer earlier, they are less likely to die within five years (from the time of diagnosis).
